  • An Open Letter to Tom

    Dear Tom
I was doing the anniversary's and came across the most important anniversary of all . is nearly three years old, a toddler in human years, but an elder in computer time.
I wasn't in on the initial few days of its infancy, so I can't tell the folks what prompted you and Brook and Christy to descide what the internet needed was yet another Atkins Support Board, but I do know that what evolved was the best support board on the web.

Just look at it Tom, would you have invisioned way back then, that in three short years, you touched the lives of 22,000 members. Would have have dreamed you'd be dealing with 280,000 posts (OMG, thats over a quarter of a million!!!) Would you have even considered that you would end up owning the most popular board on the internet.

I know it's the best cause I've visited most of them, I've even joined a few and I've seen them drop out of sight, become cliques and even offer bad advise.

What other board decided that regardless of what Atkins.com advised, we would stick to DANDR and use it as our guide. LOL, now thats not saying we haven't had some arguments over some issues. Folks have joined just to save us from the evils of Atkins. We've had discussions on if we really need to eat veggies, the carb count of bitter melon and just about every other strange vegetable on the market. We've argued about candida, fact or fiction and debated water, sugar alcohols, exercise and just about every word that the good Doctor wrote as been mulled over and discussed right here on ADBB. New folks coming to ADBB have the experience of all of that to fall back on.

What other board caters to members from around the world. I once counted that we had folks from 15 different countries and that was over a year ago. We have MODs from at least 6 different countries. We even have a sister board in Spanish.

What other board deals openly with very serious medical and health issues some which are caused by our own obesity, some with hinder our weightloss. We can and do talk openly about everthing from cholesterol levels to emotional eating.

What other board pushes exercise to folks who haven't taken a walk in 10 years and when what board cheers and applauds them when they walk to the corner and back.
What other board helps folks with computer problems, menu ideas, bootcamp, and gives out awards and Judoes.

I know the MODs do a great job and the Admins are wonderful, but you keep this board up to date. You search for newer and better software, you pay the license fees, you constantly update the equipment and you never ask for anything in return. You'll even teach us to play poker if we want.
You are to power behind this board, and we, unfortunately, don't say thank you enough.
So thanks Tom, I know that we've given you headaches, I know I've been a royal pain, I know we've been attacted by spammers and I know you sometimes want to pull the plug and go home. But you don't. You hang in there and continue to give us the best there is.

Re: An Open Letter to Tom

              blush ...

Just want to say that it really was not me ... I mean I just keep all of the pieces going together ...
I have believed from the start that the best way to run a mailing list or a board was through a democracy. I thought that we get a group of people together and that the consensus of the board will determine its direction. Other boards at the time were dictatorships and I think many felt jilted by them ... they didnt like their approach of our way or the hiway.

So at the beginning if you remember we voted and did things that way. The board grew like crazy and we dont really have a sophisticated way to do voting for 10s of thousands of people but I still try to do what is best for the majority while keeping the needs of the minority tended. Some people didnt like this and have moved on ... some have started their own boards ... some people have viciously backstabbed this board at times.

Some people here dont know who I am ... and that is basically my fault. I have been running this board , the website and atkins mailing lists for the past 10 years or so.

As the board gets bigger the work tends to be more behind the scene stuff ...
I used to be a big poster and a leader in the diet but at one point realized that others on the board were better at giving out this advice and probably more knowledgable. I like to see that OTHERS are so involved here and others take so much pride. I guess I took a step back and let the stars shine.

I am trying not to mention names here in fear of leaving someone out and there are so many of you.

3 years. Wow ... I would bet that there are few bulletin boards in the entire internet even outside of the diet field that have grown as quickly and ADBB.

The number of letters and emails and PMs that I get for thanks on this board are very numerous so I guess we are doing something right.

I also want to let you know that I am always available to be reached ... either by email or PM or even by phone. I am here for all of you to discuss the board, personal issues, the weather ... I will do my best ot be there for you.

and lastly I would like to thank you for this heart felt letter.

For those of you that dont know me I tend to ramble and my emails and pms tend to be all over the place. I just hope in this one I got what I truely feel across and to thank all of you who are involved in this board.

              Regards,
              Tom

Thanks Tom, and happy atkinsversary to ADBB!!!

I'm pretty new to this whole Atkins approach, but it's already made so many positive impacts in my life that it's hard to count! I've never been able to lose 25 lbs before, and here I've done it in a month!! I could never have done that without this board!!! The support and encouragement that comes from this place is truly special on the internet. I've looked at some other boards, belonged to a couple of different ones (not atkins/diet related) and not a single one of them has the family feeling that this place provides.

What you've all done here deserves a good round of applause! Thank you all, so much!

Original goal: Lose 30 lbs by Mar. 1st, 2006. I made it!!!

Calling it GOAL at this point. I'm happy with where I am now and hope to stay there, or maybe even take it down a little more.
