  • Tax questions...

I told my DH that this forum was were all the smart people went. Smart people choose Atkins.

My question is... He and I are married with one child. I did not have any reportable income for last year, we just have his W-2s. Should we be filing jointly? or should we file with me listed as a dependent. Head of Household did not pop up as an option, though we felt it should have. It did last year but I had made too much money that year.
We are using the H&R Block online tax thing. I was always really good at doing my own taxes, but it was just me and a 1040EZ.

    Any hints?

Sorry I don't know either. I've only ever filed single and the EZ forms!

        You should file jointly.

I believe it will put you in a "better" tax bracket.

Since you are doing it online, try both ways. I would think your standard deduction filing jointly would be more than your deduction as a dependent if you filed HoH, but I'm not sure off hand.

            Momma,

I was reading the Head of Household information on page 17, and unless you and DH were separated or living apart 6 months of the year, you do not qualify to file that way.

9 times out of 10, married couples get a better tax advantage by filing jointly.

                  Re: Tax questions...

file jointly and claim your child as a dependent. otherwise u won't qualify for the eic even if your income would entitle u 2 it.
