AN Australian tourist has been charged with assault after telling a Texas woman to stop talking on her mobile phone at the movies.

Pauline Clayton was enjoying a matinee screening of Brokeback Mountain in a Texas cinema when her day suddenly turned ugly.

The former Sunshine Coast councillor said about halfway through the movie, a mobile phone started ringing nearby, a woman answered it and started talking.

"I put one finger up to my mouth to shoosh her," Ms Clayton said.

"She ignored me - I then leaned across and touched her with three or four fingers on the top of her arm."

When the "very large" woman failed to end her call, Ms Clayton again touched her on the shoulder and that was when the woman exploded.

Ms Clayton said the woman stood up over her, started shouting expletives at her and then stormed out of the cinema, in the town of Webster, just outside Houston.

A short time later two Texas police officers walked into the cinema and escorted Ms Clayton out. She said the police took her to the food bar and explained that the woman had accused Ms Clayton of "invading her private space". The woman had made a complaint of assault because Ms Clayton had touched her.

Last Tuesday my daughters and I went out to a small Mexican Cafe'. One woman sat on her cell phone the entire time we were there. Another mans phone rang 3 times. I would be lost with out my phone but that is just bad manners

I turn mine off anywhere like a cinema. But when we went to see the last Star Wars movie (we don't go very often) 4 or 5 mobiles rang during the film and people had a conversation. Luckily we weren't too near them.

The lady with the phone was lucky it wasn't some big Aussie bloke, he would probably have ripped the phone off her and told her to shup up! Lord knows what would have happened then!

I seen the person who made the complaint and was talking on the phone....and it figures!

one of my biggest pet peeves ever - I just went and saw Capote and this woman got on here cell phone - she thought she was doing everyone a favor by kinda going back near the exit door and talking there - why she didnt just step outside of it is beyond me...

then she was sitting in the middile of the theater the whole time checking her phone - you would be watching and all of a sudden this blue light would just come shining out of the crowd over and over - why even go to the movie? alot of people there and an older crowd for the most part - they seemed very annoyed....

almost as bad as the funeral I was at the other day and all of a sudden during the closing song this lady's phone goes off with some fancy loud musical ringtone - she looked so embarassed (she should have been)....

There is a device that they make that can jam cell phone signals, unfortunatley they are illegal, the movie theaters wanted to install them in their theaters but the law wouldn't allow it.

Crimney's we never used to have cell phones and everyone survived just fine taking and making phone calls from their home, office or pay phones. I don't know when the mentality changed and people started behaving like they can't go a minute without being connected!

Exactly. I see people checking their phones at the gym all the time too. For me, gym time is my time. I just want to focus totally on myself and I don't think of work or friends or anything. I see a lot of people looking lost when they check their messages and obviously no one's called and then you see them calling various numbers and they can't get ahold of anyone. Then they get this kind of desperate frantic look on their face. Kind of sad, actually. But I don't understand the attitude on that woman at the theatre. Every other person there paid money to watch a movie but their needs are suddenly unimportant because she got a phone call??? Ridiculous!
