  • British Schools are like this. What are they like where you are?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/A1181792

Is a site that explains quite well how education in the UK is organised up to age 18. How different is it where you live?

My children attended a state funded Roman Catholic Primary School for a number of years.

There is a formal government inspection report for this school here

    http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/reports/126/126482.pdf

    Boring - no pictures

Then, because of our frequent and unpredictable moves in the Army, they went to Independent (Boarding) Schools:

    First, they both went to

    http://www.wells-cathedral-school.com/

My son then went age 14 to:

    http://www.uppinghamschool.co.uk/

then my daughter left Wells for

    http://www.felsted.org/

where she is in here final two terms.

It might be interesting to see National Information sites and particular school sites from others.

Re: British Schools are like this. What are they like where you are?

And here is one of the finest State maintained schools in England

        http://www.crgs.co.uk/

far more selective that even the best independent schools like

        http://www.winchestercollege.co.uk

and that could start a big argument.

For example, our Socialist Prime Minister sent his Children to a State Maintained School - but not the run of the mill

A very warm welcome to The London Oratory School! Trad, but quirky, The London Oratory School is amongst the City’s most prestigious Roman Catholic schools.

And why shouldn't parents want the best they can get for their children?

Re: British Schools are like this. What are they like where you are?

Actually this is an interesting thread.

Being an expat here in the UAE, you get used to all different things, including seeing the differences between educational systems, etc. In Canada, education is a "provincial" jurisdiction and the educational systems can vary from province to province. Here in this city, there is this one "Canadian" school which is run by the Nova Scotia province and for teachers they prefer to hire, not just Canadian teachers but teachers from Nova Scotia! There is another school which was for EMirati girls only, and the Ontario government got the contract to run the school (I believe it was only recently handed back to the Emirates to run themselves), but anyways while it was still under the management of the Ontario staff, they also preferred to hire Ontario teachers and not just any Canadian or western staff.

When I was a high school student ( I grew up in British Columbia), we had provincial examinations which made up 40% of our final grade, in the core subjects of Math, Science, English, etc.

But the graduation requirements vary from province to province.

hope you find this information a bit interesting

Re: British Schools are like this. What are they like where you are?

I know that when I was in school that the requirements were not very strict. Each state has some of it's own requirements, but there are also some federal guidelines. I know that the requirements are a bit more strict now, but they still are not enough. I know that some children who need extra help are not able to get it, as the federal government has cut some types of educational funding in order to funnel money into the "No child left behind" program that I believe was initiated by G.W. Bush. The problem being, that those programs that are being cut are the very programs that are needed to insure that no child is left behind. You can have a brilliant child who for whatever reason can not take tests well. Two years ago this child would have been able to take their tests in a seperate room one on one with a teacher, or would have even taken that test orally. Now they can not do that. I see a few children who are in great risk of failing due to not being able to get a little bit of extra help. And don't even get me started on the big inner city schools

At least that is what I see here in Iowa, and some of Nebraska, I can't vouch for the rest of the US and of course each place and each school is different.
