Mom jailed after dropping off girl at school

The Daily News Published February 19, 2006

LEAGUE CITY — A 27-year-old League City woman who police said confused the weekend with a weekday and dropped her 6-year-old off at school was arrested Saturday.

Lt. Bruce Whitten of the League City police department said police believe the mother thought Saturday was a school day and drove her daughter to Ferguson Elementary that morning. Despite the lack of activity at the school or cars in the parking lot the child was let off at the school, Whitten said.

A few hours later a passer-by saw the child, who was coatless in a chilly drizzle, and called police.

Whitten said the passer-by offered a set of hand warmers to help keep the girl warm and waited until police arrived.

“The officer on the scene eventually was able to make contact with the mom and have her come to the school,” said Whitten. “The mother told us she thought the day was a school day.”

Children’s Protective Services was interviewing the child Saturday afternoon and would be conducting its own investigation, Whitten said.

The mother, whose name was not initially released by police to protect the child’s identity and until another family member could be contacted to take custody, was charged with abandoning and endangering a child, said Whitten.

She was jailed on a $10,000 bond.

What? She didn't notice anything different at the school that day? What part of her anatomy did she have her head stuck up?

Re: Mom jailed after dropping off girl at school

Once upon a time, I worked 7AM to 7PM shifts. I had to work some overtime weekend hours because I needed to take a day off for a friend's wedding. So I would work my usual shifts Monday through Friday. Do the 9AM to 3 PM shifts on Saturday or Sunday. Anyhow, I was exhausted. One Sunday after my shift, I went home and I fell asleep. When I woke up, I looked at my clock and saw it was 7:30! I was late for work. So I got dressed, threw some lunch into my bag, and was running down the stairs of my apartment building when I noticed the sun was rising in the wrong direction. It was still Sunday evening, not Monday morning like I had thought it was.

I felt very silly and very embarassed. But I was relieved that I didn't have time to call and tell my supervisor that I would be late for work.

I've woken up from late afternoon naps, and thought I'd slept through the night.

But to just drop a 6 year old off at school and leave?
I never just dropped my son off - I stayed until school started. A few of us Moms would talk and watch the kids until school began and they were in their class rooms and then the same group would meet after school and wait for our kids to get out.
Its understandable to get the days confused, that happens. But to drop a child off and just leave without watching to see her safely inside the school - that I don't understand. I really don't

Actually, one time my dad dropped me off to school, and drove away (this was middle school) and apparently, school was closed beacuse of inclement weather. The janitor let me in so I could call dad to pick me up.

That might be the necessary procedure nowadays with child abductions etc., but when I was a kid, my dad used to drop us off without waiting to see we were inside the school. Heck, I remember walking to school by myself when I was in 1st grade and standing at the bus stop with other kids (no parents around) when I was in junior high.

It's sad that our current society is so unsafe for children that they have to be so closely monitored. It makes me wonder if this close monitoring is why there are so many high school and college students who get into jams because they never learned street-smarts when they were younger.

Re: Mom jailed after dropping off girl at school

I walked to school every day when I was in school, starting in kindergarten. When we lived in town, my son rode his bike to school. Granted smaller towns and cities. No I would not just drop my children off at school if there was no activity like a normal school day. This has happened where we got up late and I thought my kids missed the bus, but when we got there we found out there had been a water main break and school was cancelled. I stayed and found out why it was so quiet.
