  • What To Give Up For Lent

I have always given something up for Lent and then used the money I save to give to a local foodbank ...I love feeding people

this year I am kind of stuck for profitable sacrifices....and I am running out of time here ...

since I don't count calories that is out

but I am thinking about giving up the "F" bomb.....and doing a swear jar (stick money in if I slip)......

that is going to be really hard during my busy work season......

For those of you who do it do you want to share your Lenten sacrifice plans?

Heidi, if you really want to impress you have to give up something that is really hard to do......I know, why don't you give up Curry!?

I don't "give up", I try and "take up" .. do something good for someone else .. take up being a better person....and make it last long after Lent is over.

          MOG GOD FORBID!!!!

I appreciate the advice Betty ...

...but to me Lent is the time for sacrifice ...feeling a little pain and then paying it forward...so I give something up for these 40 days the rest of the year I can work on improving myself ....

I dont think Ive ever given something up for lent. Maybe Ill try the FBomb with Heidi. Considering I use it all the time...that might be very difficult. Tomarrow will actually be my first Lenten service and Im excited about it. (I grew up Methodist -still am- and we never had a lenten service.)

I know I'll be there! LOL. I agree with Heidi, for me it is also about sacrifice. I am still trying to figure out what I want to give up. When I was little I used to give up chocolate, soda, candy that sorta thing. It just isn't the same as you get older! LOL

Re: What To Give Up For Lent

MoG, the Methodist church I go to holds Ash Wednesday services! Ive only recently started attending on a regular basis there. They will have two services tomarrow, one first thing in the morning and one in the evening. I have no clue what to expect, dont know if they will use ashes or if its more of an affirmation type service or what.

Re: What To Give Up For Lent

I love your idea Heide of paying it forward with the financial value ofwhat you give up.
I'm givng up habeneros and anything made with them this yr.

Do Catholics still get to take Sundays off from their given up vows? I remember wondering about who was right about that when i was little and put it on my list of questions for God when i got to heaven.

Tired of Chub enjoy your ASH WEDNES DAY service. Ashes are a volunteering thing in my methodist church you can attend and not have them or have them. Traditions says they are from the burnt palms fronds from the pervious PalmSunday service.

I gave up cocacola/Coke once for Lent and ended up with cocaine/Coke addiction pamphlers from several of my coworkers as the days went on. We had a big wig in the office using my desk while I was out of the main office and I heard later he was shocked I had a Coke addiciton.

Re: What To Give Up For Lent

You know 2big, I grew up Catholic and never heard of "taking Sunday's off" until someone asked about that on the radio this morning. The DJ who is Catholic had never heard of it either, I guess it depends on what you learned growing up. I always was told it was the full 40 days, no exceptions were given!

Tired of Chub, Catholics just put a little ash on your forehead that comes from burning the Palms from the las Palm Sunday! Just a little thumb size smudge.

LOL 2big, maybe you should be more specific and say "coca cola"!

I can't ever give up Coka again MOG

our catholics did lent through easter sunday and took Sunday off which didn't make sense to me either since the days didn't add to forty. They saids their priest told them in catichizm sp? that God knew they were not perfect so they could have what they had given up on Sundays.

Wow, I have never heard of taking Sundays off either. Sounds like a few of the priests were trying to wiggle around something or give parishioners a way out. I think 40 means 40, not mostly 40!

Yea I agree. They were trying to say that if you were Irish Catholic then you get to take St. Patricks day off too! My dad is about as Irish as they get and I never heard that one either until this morning!
