    Re: Calling All Dog Lovers!

Kat how old is your dog? When GiGi was about 4-6 months old she had some piddling problems. She went to the door frequently and would sometimes go on the floor before we could get the door open. Dh was getting frustrated with her thinking she was being lazy in her house training but we took her to the vet and sure enough it was a UTI. She always had plenty of fresh water to drink, a healthy diet and clean environment but she still got one. After some antibiotics she did fantastic. She's about 20 months old now and hasn't piddled since.

Not that age has anything to do with a UTI but if your dog is really young it could just be the bladder isn't quite ready for control. Whether she's a pup or not she may well need to be checked for a UTI.

The first week we got her we tried to keep her inside because she seemed to do fine. Then once she had an accident it seems that she has to go more often than before. Matt set the alarm and got up through the night and took her outside every two hours and it worked well until one night she came and barked at our bedroom door. Matt got up and she was waiting for him (thinking maybe she had to use the bathroom after just going 30 minutes before), but she had already gone in the living room.

      What do you think?
My dog stays inside. She goes out in the morning around 6 or 7 and she is good until 5pm or even later if nesicary.

I had a heck of a time potty training her in the beginning! I thought she'd never learn! When she was a puppy she went at least every 20 minutes too!

Our two golden retriever's are "inside dogs". I'm guessing they go out to pee a total 6 or more times a day.

We have a small bell at the base of the door and we taught her to ring it with her paw when she wants out. So, sometimes, it's just to play and chase the bunny scent.

That is so cool Jerz! I bet we could teach Gizzie to do that! what a great idea. Giz will go to the door and quietly growl and wait a few seconds, if no one lets her out she does it a second time. Then she does one of 2 things, she'll bark once really loud, or she'll run over and look at you and then run back to the door! LOL

The woman we got her from recommended it. We would have NEVER thought of doing it. She told us she trained her dogs to walk around area rugs and not on them too.

Honestly, I didn't know it was such a huge accomplishment since she was our first dog. But, everyone that comes over to our house is in such amazement! We get a big kick outta it!

Moggy, that's what Chili Tess and ChaCha do as well. First time growling at the door. 2nd time Barking. If I'm asleep and don't pay attention, ChaCha will jump up on me (7 lbs) put her face millimeters from my face, and stare at me.

Lord, my dream is to lose this weight and to be healthier.

Our dog is about a year and a half old -- we just got her in June from the local animal shelter. I'm going to call the Vet today to see if they think it might be a UTI. We just had her at the Vet Saturday and I forgot to ask (sigh).

Wow! That is a long time for a small dog! I've read that smaller dogs can't hold their bladders as long as bigger ones. Shadow got to the point where he'd hold his from the time we left in the morning (7:30 am) until Matt got home in the afternoon (4:30 pm). I thought that was good for him.

Anyway, since both dogs are the same height I thought that she could hold it more than 20 minutes. That was why I was wondering if there was a problem.

                  Thanks for all the replies!!

That is so cool! Shadow goes and touches the doorknob and looks at us. Dakota (the one who goes every 20 minutes) will stand at the door if we are in the living room. But, if we are in the back (all four of us -- Matt, me, Shadow & Dakota), she runs into the living room. I try to keep track of her, but the last time we didn't make it in time.

Any of you ever watch "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Milan? I think those are fun and informative to view.

I've also read (I think on CM's website) that it takes training every day for three years for it to stick (with a dog). Whew!

Nah, that's crazy! I taught Gizmo how to sit in about 5 minutes when she was only like 11 weeks old! She has never forgotten how even if I don't tell her to for months, I say sit, she sits! She also dances, that took about 10 minutes dangling a treat just out of her reach, now she'll do it w/o treats! I think it really depends on the dog! But 3 years sounds ridiculous to me, I would have to trade the dog in if it took 3 years to teach them something!

I think the training for three years may be for problem dogs (rehabilitation). We've been trying his walking technique with Shadow and it is not there yet...he is a stubborn, dominant breed so that may be what we're working with also. But, hopefully, one day we'll get there.

I have a black and white short coat border collie named Mickey who is very intelligent, and so full of energy it's unreal. He was housebroken within 2 days at 3 months old, Also rings a bell on the doorknob to get out, and it only took me about 30 mins to train him to 'wave bye bye'. he does not need to be fenced in or tied up..i just let him out the front door and he never leaves the edge of the lawn, he has however figured out that as a person is walking by, if he throws his ball onthe road they will go get it and throw it back to him it usually takes them 3 or 4 throws to realize they're being manipulated.
