  • Trapped in BMW at 130mph

The accelerator has jammed, the brakes have burned out and he is trapped in a BMW doing 130mph

A motorist was trapped in his car driving at almost 130mph for 60 miles after the accelerator jammed.

His terrifying journey, which was followed by four police cars and a helicopter, ended when he smashed the car into a roundabout, flipping it on its roof.

Wow! That had to be scary. Thank goodness he was not hurt badly. At least the car was of good quality in that regard.

why didn't he just turn off the engine so waht if the power streering goes. he is a lorry driver for pete sake. he could have muscles the wheel to drive until he coasted to a stop.

2big, if I was to turn the engine off on my car, the steering lock would come on. Stopping me from turning the wheel at all. i am assuming the same thing would have happened to this guy.

Maybe Rich but he said he didn't want to lose the power steering not the wheel would lock. And from his shifting fear because of the redline issues it looks like he was more concerned with saving his car then any damage he would have done crashing into somebody.

as long as our key is in the wheel will turn if say yuou are polaying the radio but noit running the engine until you click the locking spot. I understand those things have a plug and a switch to start though.

He could have turned off the engine, then put the the key back in the 'on' ignition without turning the key further to start it. This will keep the steering from locking on a BMW. More obviously, he could have simply bumped the transmission into nuetral, as there is no detent there. I'd imagine he was too freaked out to think that clearly.

Also they don't mention what year 318 in the article, but only a 2006 model three series would not use a conventional key.

Re: Trapped in BMW at 130mph

I had a 1980 BMW 320i that did that to me. I put it in neutral, parked the car, turned it off and found that the accelerator cable was sticking and that it just needed some lubricant. There should have been no way that he couldn't get his car into neutral at any speed unless there is something weird about his transmission.
