  • Shipping cookies?!?!

As most of you know I am a military wife and my husband is currently out on the ship. I'd like to mail him about 2 or 3 batches of cookies for him to enjoy and share with the guys. Any tips on how to ship them? I don't want them to be all crumbs when they arrive. I've read to put them into a container (I was thinking about checking for a throwaway zip lock) and add 1/2 a piece of bread to keep them moist. Any tips or info would be much appreciated as I've never shipped cookies before. Id like to add, I've been good and haven't cheated.. but oh man was it hard making the mix w/o a taste!

    Re: Shipping cookies?!?!

I've shipped cookies to Iraq several times and tupperware has been my best bet for freshness after wrapping them first in saran wrap. Also, pad the box with lots of tissue papper or bubble wrap, and naturally, don't make anything with chocolate chips in them. They melt and get super yucky!

Pringles cans work. If you know of anybody who eats pringles ask them to give you the cans, or buy the pringles and give them the chips and keep the cans.

Make sure your container is sturdy, and wrap your cookies individually if possible, other wise, pack them tight in the container so they don't bounce around a lot.

        Re: Shipping cookies?!?!

I have been on the receiving and sending side. Send cookies that are dence and not delicate. Oatmeal cookies with dates and raisins and walnuts are good. Sugar cookies break up into crumbs.
If he is in hot weather, don't send chocolate cause they are just a melted mess.

Express mail them. They have those $8.?? mailers boxes that you can put lots of cookies in. The food is great on Navy ships but home made cookies are so welcome. Also for those of you who want to help out the girl scouts, sometimes you can buy cookies from them and they will ship them to the troops.

          Re: Shipping cookies?!?!

Thank you so much for the tips! They are oatmeal raisin, his favorite. He tells me the packages all arrive around the same time regardless of how they are shipped so I have been sending them regular. I was hoping to include a few other things, as well like some home made jerky and some light weight things like cinnamon and some work out shorts. My 4y son also wants to get him a small compass .. he told me he wants to make sure his daddy can find his way home (so sweet).

btw, have you all noticed alot of stems on sun-maid raisins? Took me forever last night picking them all off LOL. I know it sounds stupid but I ended up writing them a letter. I don't remember them ever being that bad and has been this way the last few containers I've purchased. I tried to tell my kids/hubby .... its extra fiber just eat it! Of course they didn't buy it! LOL Thanks again for the info!

Receiving cookies in Iraq, I found the one with bread were much better tasting. The pringles can is a great idea. padding, padding, padding. Definately no chocolate.

              Re: Shipping cookies?!?!

If it is military mail, that is why all the packages arrive at the same time - the military gets them, and then ships them (at least that's the way it works in Canada).

I heard oatmeal cartons (the cardboard kind) are good (a Martha Stewart book suggestion). I've used plastic (Rubbermaid) containers, as well.

Definitely they have to be firm cookies, even the "bar" type cookies are good for that purpose (the kind you bake in a pan, and then cut apart). Obviously, as stated previously, no "melting" ingredients.

Make sure your original ingredients are good and fresh, too. You probably won't have a problem with that, because you'll likely have to go and buy them for this purpose.

Oh yeah, definitely don't spend the extra money on expedited shipping. That only counts until is reaches the MPS (military postal system). Then it takes as long as it takes, which really isn't that bad.

I never tried this, but I remember reading in "Hints from Heloise" a long time ago that you can use air popped popcorn as packing material, similar to those styrofoam packing peanuts (but edible of course ).

Hmmmm. This is sort of off topic, but I just sent a box of protien bars in the mail to a friend in Iraq. They were chocolate protein bars. Do you think they'll be a mess by the time they get there? Anyone have any idea?

No the bars will be fine and its still pretty cool in Iraq, the horrid heat doesn't hit until about late May. But if you send chocolate, it melts. Anything you send home made is loved and appreciated. We even got pillows (that kinna looked like dog bisquits) from some ladies and we loved them.
We had a church group that sent these and they were also loved by all. http://watersorb.com/polymer_cool_neck_bands.htm

                        Re: Shipping cookies?!?!

                        My tricks:

Pringle and oatmeal cans are GREAT!!! esp if you use several and the box is so that you can lay several down across the bottom (or up and down) so they don't move. Some places will build you a box or have multi-depth boxes in different sizes so that you can get as close as possible to the size that say 4 or 6 or 9 pringles cans are either standing up or laying down so there's not much room for them to move. I usually shrink wrap the cans into a mass before I put them into the box.

The bread is an awsome idea a good idea if you're sending tins. I usually cut out wax paper to line the bottom in sides, lay the cookies flat, then put another layer of waxed paper, repeating and ending with the waxed paper, with the bread on top. Otherwise (such as pringle cans) I wrap each cookie in saran wrap, then wrap singles together in stacks with with either tinfoil or plastic wrap.

Since it seems that you've already decided what kind you're going to make, this doesn't apply, but I always inquire about the chocolate chip types....some people don't care if its a melted mess--but definely wrap them indiviually!!

I know there's something else I wanted to say about packing materials, but it slipped my mind...hopefully it wasn't too important.
