  • Awful day yesterday with my dog

Yesterday was awful... my dog bit one of the kids from next door.
He's a wonderful dog but he gets skittish when there are a lot of people around. I was in the shower and Mike was doing something with his truck out in front. The dogs were in the yard. Mike's cousin's kids (owner of the house we live in) get on great with Bear, never any problems. They were in the yard with their dog, Bear, and their dad. The next door kids came in, and apparently he got excied and bit one of them. If I hadn't been in the shower he would have been inside because I don't like to keep him out when there are a lot of people in and out. he tried to get out and he doesn't always listen. So next thing I know I'm getting out of the shower and i hear my dog yelp, Mike comes in and says he bit one of the kids in the leg. She needed two stitches, which i'm of course I told them I'm paying for, but now i have a dog that bit a kid. In a neighborhood with a whole lot of kids. He's such a sweet dog, and I know that one of the boys likes to bother the dogs, which doesn't justify it, but it was such a preventable situation. I've had my dog for more than 2 years, and I love him so much, i spent half the night crying. I've always had to keep him inside when I lived in an apartment, and now we have a big fenced in yard where he can play. I don't want to have to keep him inside, but I can't have him in the yard without constantly worrying that something could happen. I truly don't know anyone who'd want him, and I already researched shelters that don't euthanize animals, but it's really breaking my heart even thinking about it. I just feel like I don't have a choice with summer coming and so on.

Dotsamantha, that must be such a heartbreaking decision to make. These things happen, so I'm sure your neighbors will understand. I hope everything works out OK.

I've been in your situation before, I understand your pain. Only the child my dog bit was my own. It was heartbreaking, but my husband and I knew it was the right thing to do. It wasn't my dog's fault either, my two year old ate a piece of his food and he reacted. HUGS to you and your dog.

Do you have to give the dog away? Is it likely to happen again? If you put up a "beware of dog" sign (actually, I hate that - can you get one that says "be aware of dog"??) and keep the gate closed, then wouldn't you be okay? Kids should not be teasing dogs and perhaps you can explain to people (visitors, the neighbours) that the dog doesn't like crowds or being teased. If, legally, you don't have to put the dog down, then why are you thinking of giving it away?

I am sorry ...i work in a vet hospital and see this all the time.

YOu sound like your being respnsible.....have you thought about putting a basket muzzle on him when he is outside? They use them in greyhounds, they are humane, but will keep a dog from biting.

Dont make a rash decision take some time and think it over......

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog! My first thought was to wonder if you could build it a nice dog run where it could enjoy staying outside some of the time, but keep kids away from it.

Our dogs are gentle with people, but they fight with each other sometimes. Although they love each other and get along 99% of the time, the bigger dog has bitten the little one several times. We're considering building a double dog run/kennel to keep them separate at feeding time and at night to cut down on some of the conflict.

I sure hope you can find a solution for you, your dog, and your neighbors' children.

I agree with ladyinred. Post a sign and keep the neighbor kids out of the yard. Make it a rule of the house - if your kids have kids over to play, the dog is in the house. Period.
What is the situation that caused your dog to bite? Was he being teased? Were the neighbor kids playing rough with your kids - even if they were playing chase or tag, if your child (and in turn your dogs human) was the one being chased - your dog was protecting your child (thats what it would look like in your dogs eyes).
                I like Jo's idea too.
And don't feel like it was your fault because you were in the shower - it was an accident.
to you and your family and poochie.

Re: Awful day yesterday with my dog

you mentioned that you used to live in an apartment - have you just recently moved? If so, and your dog isn't well aquainted with the kids next door - they were strangers on Bears territory (sp). And as you said, one of the kids likes to bother dogs - who knows how they treat your dog thru the fence.
How is Bear doing? And the neighbor kid? What did her parents say? I hope everything works out and Bear stays

Re: Awful day yesterday with my dog

Thanks everyone for the kind advice. I'm not making any decisions just yet- and the child's parents are great so far. i'm paying whatever insurance doesn't cost so they seem to be happy with that. I'm going to give it a few days of just having him out very early and late and then reassess everything. Everyone involved owns pets so no one has made any harsh demands, it's more my concern in the future. I'm definitely going to think on it for a little bit though. I love my dog very much.
