Got an ideas of what to take for motion sickness?

Here's why: In about 2 weeks I'll be going on my manditory field trip with my oceanography class (WOo hooo! I can hardly wait!) and we're going to ride a boat to watch the whale procession from the warmer waters in Mexico/California to the upper cooler waters in Alaska...should be fun. But...

I get a little queasy riding on things that go faster then I can walk.

My dad suggested those copper bands and my friend who's in the same class is stocking up on dramamine.

And an ex-Navy guy I know also said: "Put duct tape over your belly button, cover it completely...you'll be fine!" Old wives tale or truth?

    Any healthy suggestions?

motion sickness is caused by your brain getting different movement signals from your bones ears and eyes. Some folk can sort it and not get sick and others can't and do.
their are many tricks but it would depend on which of your conflicting signals up down of body vs forward of eyes for one it is that your body is having. Some folk can look beyond the railing to the far horizon which willgive input of forward motion and others puke at the sight.

There are patches for wearing behind the ears you can get from your doc. you can use dramamine but you need to ingest it at least 30-60 min before the movement occurs. I've never found anything that worked for me when the boat was still in the ocean and rocking up and down with wave action.

I have a solution.... send me in yourplace!!! that trip sounds fantastic! I dont get motion sick usually (mines from varying speeds, Im weird). Anyway.... I grew up on the great lakes and we always suggested Sea-Bands to those that were known to get ill on board. the bands go on your wrists and work on pressure points. (yes they are tight, they are supposed to be). Dramamine can cause drowsyness, not fun. My mom (who gets pukey at the SLIGHTEST ripple of water) uses Bonine (sp?). It works as well as dramamine but without the urge to nap!

Ginger is a ntural remedy for motion sickness.

The following is from the website http://www.mothernature.com/Library/...oks/21/158.cfm

Herbal Therapy A scientific study from Britain says that ginger is more effective than Dramamine, an over-the-counter drug, in stopping motion sickness, says Varro E. Tyler, Ph.D., professor of pharmacognosy at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. You can buy candied ginger in Asian food markets and chew on it while traveling, according to Dr. Tyler. Or, he suggests, buy ginger supplements (they’re available in most health food stores), then take two 500-milligram capsules about an hour before embarking on your trip and one or two more capsules every four hours while you’re traveling.

I am all about ginger for cars and general nausea ...but on a boat like you are going on..because I have spent time hanging over the edge begging for death to come rapidly ....I need a scopalimine (sp?) patch or I would puke for sure
your doctor has to Rx it but it is well worth it and does not make me feel as tired as dramamine ..you stick it behind your ear..and go have fun with no puking ....omg I hate that feelling ... also make sure you EAT!!!! one time I thought I would do better on an empty stomach...dry heaves are even worse than puking!!!!

Nice. I get nauseated....looking at the horizon might work, but then I'd miss the whales. lol.

I've heard about those patches...I'm going to hit Walmart on Friday and take the suggestions and ask 101 questions at the pharm.

            Thank you!!!

lol...Nope...I'm going. I'm kind of selffish that way. lol. But you can go with me It'll be loads of fun!

I've heard of Bonine...and dramamine making folks sleepy. I need to be wide eyed and bushy tailed for all the walking and scenery we're going to be doing.

Thanks for the idea with the band. That sounds non evasive

I use to take slices of ginger and up in my water for a detoxin type thing..added bouns to water. I'll have to check that out too. I hate taking pills. Choking down my one-a-day is like trying to get a snake to eat a moving rat...anyways....lol.

Thanks for your insite and the website! That's very helpful!

Oh, Heidi...sounds like you're describing me....hangin on the edge of the boat praying for mercy or a quick death.

I've heard of that scaopalminie (whatever). Definitly going ask about that one.

Eating before boating? Eeek...maybe. You're right though, better to actually throw something up then not at all. Oh, that doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean.

Thanks for everyone's input! I'm headin to Walmart on Friday to check things out and I'll let ya know!

Dramamine works BUT it makes you very sleepy! You'd probably fall asleep and miss the whales all together!

Don't have S E X on a waterbed? Badum bump Oh, sorry, that's not what you were asking.

My mom swears by the wrist bands. And you can keep them forever and use them whenever you want as opposed to buying medication every time you get on a boat or a plane. Just something else to consider.

Re: Got any suggestions for Motion Sickness?

unless they have changed the med laws you will need an RX for the patchs.

Mythbusters on the discovery channel did a test with 2 staffers who get motion sickness testing all the various remedies including the ginger but they drank a ginger teaI THINK IT WAS HARD TO WATCH CAUSE THE SPINNING MADE ME SICK opps sorry darn caps key. if you are at the rail standing so the up and down motion of the rail isn't in your vision you should be able to see the whales away from the boat and not get sicker as they draw nearer and you have to look down also the size of your boat will play a big role in the sea effects you get. small zodiac you will undulate with the feild of vision and shouldn't get too sick which is why even folk who get sea sick can sit on a raft in the waves without getting sick. Ask your prof too as I'm sure many mnay students have suffered seasickness over the yrs on this trip and he should be a field observer expert on what worked and didn't.

One big key is get the stuff in before you start one you are sick it dont work. If you do get sick try the old breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth trick as that can work miracles one you start feeling ill. also closing your eyes and shutting off that sensory input can help some folk.

Have fun and remeber the placebo effect is very strong so whatever you pick believe it will work!
