  • Feet question for walkers/runners

    Hey,

My name is Joanie and my feet are horrendous!!! I was up until recently walking 4.5 miles a day. Just due to the pressue in my shoes 2 of my toenails have fallen off. I can't wear open toed sandles. This is getting to be a nightmare. First thought of most of you is poorly fitted shoes. I do not believe that to be the case. My shoes feel fine. It's just the constant pressure of the same thing day after day. You there tddriver? Don't you ever have toes problems? My sister who is a veteran runner is always experiencing some kind of toe problem. Is there a solution? Also, this is probably a stupid question, but can a salon put on fake toenails the same way they do fake fingernails? I just know, my big toenail is going to maybe be normal by the end of the summer. I need a toenail now. Any suggestions?

My first suggestion is to post this in the exercise forum, there are a lot of runners and walkers here. The best way to support your toenail growing in is to keep it out in the air. Even though your shoes don't feel uncomfortable, they can still be putting pressure on your toes.

wow I know runner have toenail issues but I've never had any toenail issues with my walking and I've been doing miles since June 2002.

Why don't you call your local salon and ask about applied toenails.

It sounds to me that your training shoes could be too small. Even if just slighltly. I would suggest you visit a store that gives you some expert advice on fitting etc.

I dont know if you have any of these stores near you, but where I live there is a place where I can go which will put you on a treadmill to judge your walking / running style and then will find a shoe to fit your ways.

Yes, I have had Toe nail extensions before when I dropped a weight on my foot and lost some nails.. Its a sick idea but my toe nails never looked so fabulous.

Can't help with the other issue..sorry

Thanks for the responses. How much do the fake toenails cost?

Do you need a full set? Here in NYC - Harlem to be specific, it cost me around 15 bucks.

Hi Joan, long time since we talked. But I've lost toenails running and it's from shoes being too small. Buy a special pair of shoes for walking or running and buy them a half size or full size too big. That is what is recommended fro runners. The nail gets traumatized from the repeated impact with the front ot the show. Also keep the nails trimmed a little shorter than normal, this also helps.

HI GIRLIE!!! HOW THE HECK ARE YOU??? ..OH WAIT YOUR FEET ARE BUGGING YOU ..DUHHH!!!! I ran for 10 years with out a problem with my feet but I am obsessive about caring for them!!! I posted a "Take care of your feet" thread in the Health section of the board ..it is good for ANYONE ...your feet are so important to your overall health and emotional well being I can not stress enough just how important caring for them is....you have to get the BEST shoes you can afford ...YOU SHOULD NOT BE LOOSING TOENAILS!!!! ANY OF YOU!!!!!

I wore Asics Gel keyano when I ran and replaced them with out fail every 4-6 months they are well padded had did not force my toes into the ends of the shoe when I was pounding the pavement...also do your pedicures ...every day check your feet it is so important ...if an infection starts in those little digets you have to be right on it ...

don't think that because you use your feet they should be subject to punishment because that is not true..if you use them a lot they should be treated like gold ...lots of soaking ...lots of rubbing and lots of lotion ...most of all again the best you can afford in shoes ...all the time ....work shoes, walking shoes, and even dress shoes....lotion and socks at bedtime ...

                  see I am foot obesessed

                    Re: Feet question for walkers/runners

I went on a vacation where I did lots and lots and lots of walking in shoes that we just a teeny bit tight, I also lost both of my big toenails as a result! It hurt like H@ll BTW! Yea, I don't see why they couldn't put on fake toenails, as long as there is some nail there to attach them to, I don't think they could do it if it is just skin though. Good Luck! Let us know if you do manage to get them fixed.

I used to lose my "pinky toe" nails after every road march. My boots weren't uncomfortable, but yes, they didn't fit properly. My boots were kind of pricey and I resisted for a while, but when I finally decided to get a new pair, the problem wasn't the size, it was the width. I have squarish feet. Even though i'm a 6 and 1/2 to 7 (US) I have to get them wide. My sneakers, casual shoes, boots. Sandals I can go regular, but the others have to be wide. Ya have to take care of your feet
