Anyone ever been to this site? www.dollwar.com.

It's basically a game where you get a doll and you battle against other dolls in order to earn gold to buy clothing to dress it up.

I know--lol, I have way too much time on my hands.

The link didn't work, and my screen froze when I tried. It sounded like fun, though! I was looking for a good diversion! \

          Re: Doll War

I live in the U.S., North Carolina to be exact. Actually my family and I are transplants from New York. That's where I was born and grew up. My hubby was born in Palestine but his family moved to Jordan when he was three and never left. (Almost all of them still live there). About 3 years after we got married, we moved to NC.

meena is actually my daughter's nickname. Her real name is Aminah, but we all call her meena-beena. ^.^

My name is Tanya. Nice meeting you.

Really? That's neat. I was born in Staten Island, so I'm more of a city rat, lol. There are so many of us New Yorkers though here in NC. Almost everyone I bump into is from NY in one way or another (that or they know someone from NY).

I have to tell you, I'll take NC over NY anytime. I love it here. My mom and sister still live in Staten Island and I can't convince them life is better here. They just don't know what they are missing out on. Trees and space. lol. Both are a hot commodity there where they live. Me on the other hand, I have a forest right next to my house! That's only stuff they can see if they go upstate.

There's plenty of open space where I'm from, lots of cows too! LOL, and way too much snow for my liking! When we moved down here 40 years ago it was because of the Research Triangle Park, dad was transferred down here with IBM (I've Been Moved is what we say it stands for!) Its changed a lot in those 40 years here btw! A lot less trees than there used to be sadly. But its still pretty isn't it!

                  Re: Doll War

lol, that's EXACTLY why we moved originally. DH was offered a job at IBM in rtp. He now owns his own computer repair business though.

I live just 5 minutes in either direction from cow and horse farms. I told you, I'm a certified city rat so seeing a cow was a big thing for me when we moved down here. Seeing a tree for that matter was a big thing, lol.

Things here are much slower and less crazy than in NY. Honestly, I don't miss it at all. It's been about 2 1/2 years since I've been back.

                    Hey Meena!

I know you posted to a reply of mine somewhere on another thread, but you know

                    i can't find it!!

You were saying something about your sister lives in Kuwait and you were saying someting about Dubai.

We actually live about 1.5 hours from Dubai, in the capital of the UAE - Abu Dhabi. It's less crowded and a bit more quieter than Dubai!

How long has your sister been living in Kuwait for?

Where in Jordan did your hubby live? We went to Jordan last summer on summer vacation, it is really nice there. Have you been there?

Take care nice talking to you!

lol, this board is immense and it's easy to lose track of where you posted stuff.

Yes, my sister in law lives in Kuwait. She's been there for years now, ever since she got married which was about 4 years ago. She says she loves it, but because she's not a Kuwaiti citizen, they aren't treated well. They always have issues with thier visas and they aren't allowed to own a car and there is some issue with their having a phone??? My husband wanted to go visit her a few months ago but realized fast how many hurdles he'd have to jump through just to get into the country and said forget it.

I've heard that if you are a citizen, living there can actually be quite nice. Citizens are given tons of stuff from the government, like a ton of cash when you get married!!

I have also heard a lot of nice things about Dubai, and I've heard of Abu Dhabi. How is it living there as someone who is "westernized"? I'm sure it has all the creature comforts unlike Jordan.

I've been to Jordan with my family before. Almost all of my dh's family lives there. It was a real shock when we landed. The first thing I saw straight out of the airport was two little boys riding donkeys right next to the highway.

Everything else took a long time getting used to as well. From the bathrooms to the kitchen, it's all sooooo different. Even something simple like washing clothes is a huge deal over there since they have issues with the water.

The first thing I did when I came home was spend an hour in a hot shower.

When we went, we spent the bulk of our time in Amman. That was where dh's father lived. Now they all live in Zarqa. Well, all except his brother, who used to live next to the airport--but has since moved and now I think lives in Amman.

My husband just went back a few months ago to visit them all. He spent two weeks in Egypt first though. (He's half Egyptian)

It's impossible to get us all there because there are 5 of us and the ticket prices are crazy. However, we are working on saving so that perhaps by next summer when school lets out, we can all get over there to visit. I told my hubby, I'm packing my AC. lol. Hopefully by then I'll have dropped 100 pounds and the heat won't be such an issue.

                        Re: Doll War

                        MEENA!

                        Oh man

You will be glad that you talked to me probably. If you are looking for cheap airfares to the Middle East from North America......seriuosly...try with the Italian Airlines (Alitalia). The airline is okay for the money you pay, but it is a heck ofa lot cheaper than the rest, (British, KLM, etc). You have to go through Milan, Italy and then onto your Middle East destination from there. So next time you guys are thinking of heading there, check with Alitalia. I forget which part of the USA you are in, but chances are if Alitalia doesn't fly from your city to Milan directly, then you can catch another domestic flight (through Alitalia) and onto the major airport that does connect to Milan, etcetc and its still cheaper!
Kuwait isn't really the best place int he Middle East or the gulf at least. My hubby is Iraqi and we owuldn't even think of trying to go there. If you are American though apparently they do favour Americans. That's pretty weird stuff about not being able to own a car, etc. The UAE is much easier of a place to be, definitely. They've even opened up the real estate market here so you can own real estate as well. The phone thing is weird as well! If your hubby is a US citizen then he will have no problems coming to the UAE, the USA is one of many countries (mostly western ones) where you get your passport stamped with a 2 month visa on arrival. If he's from any other country (carrying the passport) then he has to get sponsorship from someone already residing here (local or non-local), etc, and it can be a bit of a pain for paperwork but it is possible.

Yeah the Emiratis are pretty spoilt, but there are a lot who live in the more remote villages , etc who live a completely different standard of life compared to the rich Abu Dhabi or Dubai ones. but yeah they do have a lot of perks!

Yeah its nice here, has its good and bad points. Well, I am an open minded person, don't really consider myself from anywhere really, east or west, jsut me! lol But on the same token, like for work etc, I guess I am biased towards "western" ways of doing things at the workplace, human rights, work ethics, etc, and also the healthcare system gets on my nerves, but that's life!
Yeah compared to Jordan the UAE is more cleaner and more hospitable. Like for instance if you go on road trips around the country, y ou will stop by "5-star truckstops/gas stations (as my mom called them - with clean and shiny marble flooring even in the middle of nowhere), whereas in Jordan I saw some pretty ugly "holes" that I had to use as toilets LOL

I think they drive much better in Jordan than here. Here the drivers are nothing but a bunch of testerone (for male drivers) / (estrogen - for female) driven animals behind wheels! They dont' know what safety driving means, and use their cars as weapons. Since January there have been like 150 deaths in Dubai alone because of careless and wreckless (stupid) drivers. They speed here, don't use signals when changing lanes, flash their lights behind you while tailgating even a foot or two away going fast, so that you move out of their way...etc .etc In Jordan it just seemed that they didn't drive as fast at all but still didn't use signals that much when changing lanes. But I felt safer in Jordan while driving than I do here. When I drive here, I drive completely defensively.

Next time you go to Jordan make sure you check the other places, it is so fascinating there.

Yeah i ts hard carrying this excess weight around int he heat. That's all the more reason to get rid of it! (you and me both!!)

Well I'll stop there! What a mouthful hehe

                          Re: Doll War

lol, I will definately be telling dh about alItalia! As a matter of fact, I'm going to go check out prices RIGHT NOW!!

It sounds too good to be true as all the other flights we've looked into have been in the range of about 1300.

As far as the hassle to get a visa to go visiting, my hubs has yet to get his citizenship. He's just applied and done the fingerprints, so we wait. He'd have to go through the sponsership deal and all that jaz, and for a few days--it wasn't worth it.

It sounds like a slice of heaven over there. I remember Jordan wasn't all that I thought it would be cracked up to be. I loved the adventure though and all of my dh's family is the best (I'm really lucky that way).

The thing I miss the most is that awesome amazing ice cream they have there. It's kind of like gelato, with pistachios. I've never had anything like it since I've been there and probably never will again!!! yum.

Driving in Jordan was an experience. You must have a strong constitution if you can actually drive yourself. The most appauling and shocking thing for me was the whole car seat thing. We brought two with us on the plane and when we got off and met his family, we realized fast that not only does no one use car seats, the seat belts were all mostly not functional. That combined with all those darned circles and crazy taxis made me not want to go out much.

We actually braved a bus once from the out door market in Zarqa back to Amman. It was horribly small and overcrowded and I had my two kids who were small (5 and 2) and my mother in law and myself with arms loaded with packages. When we got to the stop, my mother in law raced off the bus (obviously she knew better than me to get off fast) and I was left with my sleeping 5 year old and like 5 bags, one of which broke and I had to find the mangos which rolled under the seat and the guy in the drivers seat started yelling YELLA YELLA!! He shut up fast though when I yelled back, I'M GOING AS FAST AS I CAN.

lol, I love doing that to rude people. ^.^ The look of shock on his face was priceless.

I want to go to Petra. That's something I've always wanted to do ever since Indiana Jones. Other than that, there really isn't much else to do there other than visiting family. The Roman ruins were pretty neat. I have some pics I think that I should post. I'll go see if I can find them in my photobucket and post them here for you.
