  • When up is down and more is less!

    I hate Japenese engineering!

I hate our combination microwave. To get it to defrost I have to push the microwave button twice, then choose the time by pushing the minute and 10second buttons a number of times.

Now this rational Anglo-Saxon can't get it out of his logical brain that to get more power I push the control more. Wrong: to get half power I push it twice as often. Result: berries boiled to a residue rather than gently defrosted delectable fruits.

I hate our Toyota Car. General Motors and most European Cars have a reasonable consensus on where the controls are and how they work. But the petrol gauge on my Toyato has a needle that points to the left of the scale when the tank is full, and the right of the scale when the tank is empty. I suppose that's because the left of the scale is higher up the dashboard than the right of the scale.

But this Anglo-Saxon expects to read from left to right, and expects (as does everyone using universal arabic numbers) that the lowest values on the scale will be on the left.

Result: serious irritation and mental gymnastics every time I try to read the scale.

    Hey Ho

    Rant over.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
    he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Re: When up is down and more is less!

I love Japanese engineering! and I love my Japanese car and would never buy anything other than what I have again!!!...it gets over 30 mpg and I can reach everything with out looking while I am driving...it fits me perfectly and it goes faster than most others on the freeway so I am never late for work!!!! Not to mention I NEVER have to worrry about parking because it fits almost anywhere!! I also know my next computer is going to be a Toshiba and I am in the process of choosing the one I want now... and I would not have my pocket PC with my entire life in it if it was not for Japanese technology

so just to even things out a bit while you hate it ..I am over here loving and appreciating Japanese ingenuity

not to mention I love Sake but that is not technological I just wanted to add that!

I have to say all the guages and stuff in my car read the "Anglo Saxon" way ( I have never heard that term before I have to admit) !!! I guess because I understand when my car is full or empty so I can send my husband to go and pump my gas for me when the arrow is on the "F" means full and when the arrow points to "E" it is emptyand a gas pump lights up for me when it is low!

Now you come to mention it Brian, I have the same problem with my Japanese manufactured car.

I have a Mazda, and the fuel gage has the exact same problem that yours does. However, I chose Mazda BECAUSE its a Japanese make and then also very reliable and worth the money.

So I suppose its a case of swings, roundabouts and other suchlike playground equipment.

IMHO, Japanese and German cars are the most reliable of them all.

But just my opinion of course, before I risk upsetting people.

My last car was German (MINI cooper, BMW makes them) and it had the most useless cup holders of any car, i've heard this is common with german cars (no idea why though). The cup holder was in front of the gear shift, so even though you could put a cup of coffee in it..you kocked it over when you changed gears. It was pretty reliable though...I had it for 3 yrs...though for the warranty i had to have oil changes done at the dealership twice a year which cost $250 a shot. I sold it because the warranty was running out and i figured i could never afford to fix a car that costs $250 to change the oil LOL.

I've never before seen a car, japanese or other, that has the gas guage going the opposit way I do know that Honda accords are so popular here that there is a waiting list for them....

I usually fill my jeep when that 'your running out of gas' light comes on and a bell starts ringing LOL. i'm always driving on fumes, drives my husband nuts.

German Cars are EXPENSIVE to fix and replace parts on that is one thing I know! and so are US made cars for that matter ..
I love the look of a German car but man when I see what my friends deal with when they need repairs ....

personally "knock wood"... my car just drives me around looks nice ...and causes me no stress so far!!!

My new car is a Daewoo, replacing the Hyundai that I managed to write off. Both are Korean made. Yet the new one has the blinker/lights switch on the left and the windscreen wiper on the right, the opposite to the old car. I keep wiping the windscreen when I want to go round the corner!

              *Cough*

I hate british cars! This rational american-born girl expects to get in on the left hand side of the car when she wants to drive!

              Ok...

              *runs for cover*

Anyways, thanks for the post Brian. I cracked up reading that, because I used to have a microwave that did the same thing. Whenever I wanted my scrambled eggs I had to pause for a good two seconds before pressing anything.

I'd love to have my Honda back! That was the best car I ever owned. I bought it new and drove it for 18 years before I let John talk me into getting this stupid Saturn I have now! I've spent more on repairing this Saturn in less than 2 years than I spent the entire 18 years on that Honda! Japanese cars ROCK!

Not to mention built to last. Something American cars are not.

Oh and shall we talk RESALE VALUE?

So THAT's why I have trouble driving my DH's Celica.

But then again, I'm a one-car woman and love my Dodge.
