My son asked me this morning if Panda was Atkins friendly then sent me this journal entry ..I wanted to share it...enjoy

    Pandas are like Avocados
Journal Entry: Thu Jun 1, 2006, 7:32 AM

    Mood: =P
    Listening to: Funny Little Feeling
    Reading: Catch-22

If you are reading this, it is possibly because of the title. If you understand what it is that I mean when I say that pandas are like avocados, then you are either very bright, or crazy. Or possibly both. This is a peek at how my mind works.

During a conversation with we passed a Panda Express and a joke was made about how many pandas there were in the world and how the heck Panda Express got away with cooking them. After a brief laugh, I said “It’s funny how Pandas are becoming like Avocados” and gave me that look that people usually get when I say “crazy” stuff like that.

When I thought about how few pandas there were in the world, I remembered about the exhaustive efforts that china has been putting forth to keep those pandas alive. They spend a fortune on those finicky animals because they are beautiful and a symbol of their country. However in captivity and in nature, their diets are very specific and they tend to be rather unsuccessful at raising their young. Often times the young are abandoned during the breeding program and the caregivers are quick come the helpless baby’s rescue. If they are unable to find a surrogate parent, then the baby is hand raised. China owns every panda in the world. They guard these raccoon/bears as if they are worth more than gold. When they leave china, they are leased and must be returned when the contract ends. The first successful panda that was born here in the USA, doses not belong to the USA. It belongs to china. Why is china so protective of the panda? Because they are dying off, slowly, and china is fighting hard to keep these beautiful treasures alive.

Now come the Avocados. The avocado is a fruit with a tough skin that contains slippery green meat that is rich in vitamins minerals and the healthy fats that are very nutritious. It also has a huge seed in the middle. How do most fruits spread their seed? They hide it inside a tasty snack that is willingly gobbled up by a passing animal. The seeds are then carried by the animal and returned to the soil with a generous helping of fertilizer that is necessary for the seed to grow into another plant. I hope I haven’t lost you yet, because I am close to the point here.

So can you name an animal that could be found near Central America and the southern states of the USA that can swallow an avocado whole with little chewing?

Buffalo are grazers and even if they could reach the avocados off of the tree, they grind everything they eat with their molars. Horses could eat them, maybe even swallow the seeds, but horses haven’t been here in the Americas for more than a couple of hundred years. Same with cows too.

The only possable known animal that would be able to flourish on the avocado and ensure it’s survival, is the giant sloth. Last I checked, they died off about 10,000 years ago (though there is some controversial evidence that shows them dying off about 5k years ago). The giant sloth stood up to 20ft tall and was believed to be brought to extinction by early man and harsh weather conditions.

I had a chance to see some neat fossils down at the La brea Tar Pits down in California. I would encourage anyone who gets a chance to visit, to do so

So are you starting to see my point? Or have I completely lost you?

If the primary feeder of the avocado died 5-10 thousand years ago, why is the avocado still alive? The answer is simple; it is because of man.

There is extensive evidence in archeological digs that show the avocado being cultivated as far back as 720 B.C. Apparently we really liked the fruit to the point of taking over were the sloth’s left off. To this day, the avocado depends on use, for it dose not flourish in the wild alone.

So, in about 5 seconds I came to the conclusion that pandas may come to the point were they might only exist with the aid of mankind, much like the avocado.

Now when I say that pandas are like avocados, do I sound less crazy?

You can imagine how my friends deal with me at times, cause I do this a lot (not always intentional). That’s just the way my mind works, and if you figured out what it was that i was thinking when you read the title, then I applaud you and I hope that I may have found another kindred spirit

I wonder if Pandas like avocado? Or better yet, I wonder what Pandas taste like...

I am so going to helll.

The best way to spite your enemies? Be successful and leave them behind

American Chinese food is a real turnoff to me, and authentic Chinese is hard to find. I've never even bothered with Panda Express.

My moms friend is from Hong Kong, and when i lived in Detroit, she took us to an authentic Chinese restaurant. We're always the only non asian people there. The menu is in Chinese, and no one seems to speak English. I let Anita order for me. The food is awsome, and mysterious.
