Hey Nelson, not too many people want to visit Kansas....be careful of what you wish for!

SG, I guess I didn't think about how long it takes to drive in a large city. Around here, it doesn't take long to get about, even when it's "rush hour" which is really like "15 minute rush" lol. This may pose a slight problem for us. I've been using Map Quest to figure out milage and time, but now I can see how the time factor really won't work in LA since it doesn't account for traffic. grrrr!

LA IS SO MUCH FUN!!!!! You have to leave something to impulse ..I just say get on Santa Monic blvd and have at it ..stay in the right hand lane and explore a day from one end to the other ..there are so many things to see and do!!!!
the Getty Museum is insane!!! I loved it...also check out the prices of eating ethnic you can eat Persian, Caribbean, Indian ..for less than $20/dinner $3/10 for lunch it is insane it is so cheap to eat there!!! the guide books all have suggestions ..

but what I do is just look around and pick places that have a "A" or "B" rating from the health dept...ok I will eat in a "C" but then I love living on the edge!!!

I would save one unplanned day ..

OH they close the street by the Santa Monica pier on the weekends for a farmers market that is KILLER!!!!

Bio...drive time is nothing what you think it is around here! 10 miles = 25 minutes or more! I suggested Lucy's in case you were in the Hollywood area checking out studios or something like that! There are sooooooo many places to eat and see and as you can see, we all have a different view as to what's fun around here. No matter, you guys will have a really great time!

Do you belong to AAA, or do you know anyone who does? Get them to prepare a TRIP-TIK for you! You'll get maps, schedules, and ideas!
I'm a member. You get all kinds of travel guides through them, too. Internet Search them to see if you have an AAA store in your area. If so, you can go in and pick up stuff. If you PM me the area you'll be searching out, I'll be happy to have info sent here --- then, I'll send it off to you. But, I'm not sure it could all be accomplished fast enough. I'm on the northeast coast, but I know that Santa Barbara is quite pretty. I would just drive up the coast. If you go far enough, you can stop in Carmel... a lovely area near San Francisco. If you go up that far, you can also find a way to check out the RedWood forests!

              Enjoy your trip!

Holy cats! I completely forgot about AAA! Heck yes, we're members....I'll give them a call today. Thanks for reminding me, Mandi!!

I starting to believe that I'll need more than a week to visit all the places I want in Southern California. I'm not even going to attempt the bay area on this trip.

Bio, it would be difficult to see everything in a week. If you plan by "area" you can get alot in! Bay area...definitely another trip! Almost a different State up there...they like to think so anyway!

NoCal is totally a different breed of animal!!! If you only have a week, I would plan on staying in the LA area, with a short drive to Santa Barbara if you feel like it. There is so much to do here - things I still haven't done in all the years I've lived here!

Wish I had more than a week to visit! I hate the idea of missing out on something, but I guess that's a good reason to come back to visit! I'm bummed that the red wood forests are so far away from LA, so that's definately another trip in the future.

You gals have been such a great help to me, so many thanks are in order!!!

See, now Melrose is near the Tar Pits which is next door to the LA County Art Museum! It's Just north of there. That would be a fun combo day, if you don't spend the whole day at the Museum! Melrose is a true taste of young L.A. kids and really great shops mixed among the really odd shops! Also the original Farmer's Market is really near there. DON'T GO TO "THE GROVE"....just a big mall. The original farmer's Market, at the corner of Fairfax and 3rd is really great. It's been there for 100 years. Go for lunch.

My Dearly Beloved is from LA and I love to visit with him. We hit many of the places mentioned here but I have to agree with Sillygirl about the original Farmer's Market. No visit is ever complete until we go there and I usually manage to talk him into 2-3. I LOVE lunch there. I got a clunky clasp watch at Weiss Jewelers that cost $16 and I get constant, raving compliments on it. I actually like The Grove but I like anyplace that has a Barnes and Noble. We love to go to the beach near where we stay in Manhattan Beach, get a cup of coffee and stroll along the pier watching surfers. Marina Del Rey is another place we enjoy and I think you can still take a day tour to Catalina Island from there. Whatever you choose to do have fun at it!!!
