      Re: Nasty Things.

I worked in restaurants/bars for about 23 years. We RARELY go out to eat! I'll just leave it at that.

Oh, and John is a plumber...the stories he could contribute to this thread! Nah, lets not get that disgusting. Germs alone are bad enough!

                        Re: Nasty Things.

I grew up around restaurants. My parents own 2 in RI and I've waitressed for years. It's true, some waitresses don't think about how much contact they have with peoples food, but usually when you go to more upscale places, they are more conscious and clean. Also if you don't abuse your server, chances are they won't be compelled to retaliate. We also deal with a fair amount of disgusting crap from the customers. Here's an excerpt from a blog I wrote once when I was still waitressing that's RIGHT in like with the OP:

At work today one of my tables was a lone ranger, this guy who from across the room looked like he would be a whole lot of...obnoxiousness. He was tall and quite large and old...he looked like the Quaker Oats guy gone terribly, terribly wrong (and I'm not talking about the dude on the box, but their spokesperson there....Wilford Brimly?) He was wearing a plaid shirt and dickie type pants, with suspenders of course. I get over to the table to great him and was taken back by his appearance. The poor thing looked like he'd either bee in a terrible industrial accident as a child or an unfortunate victim of some birth defect. His mouth was "o" shaped most of the time with some teeth set pretty far back in there, note the 'some' teeth...they didn't look much like what you and I would call teeth, but I guess if they do the job. He had the wide set kind of Asian looking eyes of someone with Downs Syndrome and hands that reminded me of Danny Devito as The Penguin in Batman Returns. Dispite all this, he was really sweet mannered. I was polite and looked him in the eyes while talking to him, very careful not to stare or seem put off. He ordered lasagna and a meatball. I was told by the hostess that he's a regular, so I finagled the meatball for free and didn't charge him for his soft drink (nothing huge but it's the best I can do). While he was eating I stopped over and was really nauseated by the way he ate, food was going EVERYWHERE....it was AWFUL...drool and all. Apparently because of this, he is a less than favorite customer of the other servers. I can't fault him for this, there's quite obviously something wrong that is beyond his control. So at the end of the meals where I work we do this stupid thing called Italian Bingo. It's a wine bottle with 300 pegs in it. Most of them are white, 3 have a color...1 red and 2 green. I shake the bottle and if I pull out a red peg, the customer gets a $50 gift card, green is $10. I managed to pull out a red peg for this guy, which made me feel nice...when this happens I have to scream to the restaurant "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE HAVE A WINNER!" and he was SOOOOO HAPPPPYYYYYY! He high fived me and shook my hand. He paid me and left, very careful to warn me he had stowed some quarters in the check binder. He left me $1 on $10, but I wasn't expecting much more. Feeling all good about this experience and thinking I'm not such a bad person after all, I was happily cleaning up my tables. I get to his and pick up his glass, firmly planting my hand in a mass of drool and marinara sause on the side, I actually dry heaved a little and ran to the kitchen to throw the glass in the dish pit. I ran to the bathroom and washed my hands...stood in the pantry and shuddered with the skeeves...so much for feeling great about humanity...

I didn't read the whole thread so I hope nobody said this, but CELLPHONES! Think about everything you touch in a day and then touch your cellphone without washing your hands. Plus, it gets put on countertops, the dingy bottom of your purse/pocket, friends borrow it, etc. And then it gets pressed to your face, mouth, and ears. Gross!
