I know there are many barbeque people here, many of who have both modes of cooking. Myself, yes I have both, but I much prefer charcoal cooking. What are your preferences? I just love the charcoal taste over the gas cooking. Only upon ocassion will i fire up the gas grill - mainly due to time constraints. Woud love to hear the responses.

Re: Charcoal or Gas
Charcoal and don't use lighter fluid!!!!!!!!
Charcoal cooked food tastes more authentic to me than the gas grill (sorry gas fans). But the way to ruin charcoal food is to use lighter fluid----the food has a weird chemical taste.~Megs~

Re: Charcoal or Gas
We have a gas grill for quick and easy dinner most of the time. It has a rotisserie too and that's great for chicken or pork loin mmmm.
However, my favorite is my dad's "grill" it's a pit made of bricks and he puts orange wood in and burns it down to coal, puts this grate over top of it and puts whatever meat he's cooking and then puts green palm fronds on the top. The meat is soooooooo moist and the citrus flavor from the orange wood is incredible!~Joy

Re: Charcoal or Gas
I prefer the taste of charcoal, definitely, and with practice I have not found the temp easy to control, but easy to read and cook accordingly. I find with gas that all the heat escapes as soon as you open the lid. DH says that's in my imagination though
He prefers gas also becuase of the control and the quick startup.

Re: Charcoal or Gas
I like the flavor charcoal gives, but it's gas for me. I cook for one... just me. And it's silly to light up a pile of charcoal to cook one steak or chicken breast or whatever. I love the convenience of being able to turn it right on and be done in a few minutes and not have to worry about cleaning up my stove... gas is EASY cleanup!

Re: Charcoal or Gas
This reminds me.....When I was a kid, many of our neighbors built brick grills. They looked like brick chimneys, but the fire level was waist high and they also had work-tops.Originally posted by ValidRougeHowever, my favorite is my dad's "grill" it's a pit made of bricks and he puts orange wood in and burns it down to coal, puts this grate over top of it and puts whatever meat he's cooking and then puts green palm fronds on the top. I don't see too many of those around anymore. Too bad, because they looked pretty.
But I totally agree with fruit woods. I have a friend who has several apple and pear trees, so I get some prunings for my grill.~Megs~
