Yep, or with a salad spinner. But I would think you'd need some kind of soap and/or disenfectant to get rid of something as nasty as E-coli!

Kind of takes the convience out of the bagged lettuce. I just bought my first head of lettuce for the first time in years, what a hassle. So how many people are willing to give up the prepackaged stuff? I will probably for a while til I forget but then back I will go.

Oohh...okay. They use to sell that, "Veggie and Fruit" cleaner...I dunno, I think running under water and shaking dry sounds good enough.

I normally just rinse and shake or roll in paper towels...but never thought about "rinsing" the bagged salad. Something to consider since I just brought 2 home today.

I always wash them, they seem to have an aftertaste to me if I don't.

Our local news program did they're own tests after this came out, and of all the ones they tested, they didn't find too many bacteria on the bagged ones, but found tonnes on loose veggies. I think like Jim says you're best to use cautionand wash all of them.

Quite a while back I saw a show where they tested several areas to see where the most bacteria, like e-coli, was found on common objects. If i remember right it was shopping cart handles, the chains on swings in playgrounds, the the worst one..Womens makup packaging and foundation sponges. The makeup ones where women who put on/store their makeup in the bathroom and leave it on the counter etc. That really grossed me out. though wearing bacteria on your face is bettre than eating it i guess LOL.

For bagged salad, I cut a corner off, fill up the bag with tap water, shake & drain, repeat.

Hmm, well I just bought another bag this weekend, but I avoided the Dole brand.

Sadie, now in my local grocery stores they have a big dispenser of sanitizing wipes for you to use on the cart handles! I love it! Hey maybe they should just start requiring everyone to wash their hands on the way into the store! Man how gross are people that they're using the bathroom and not washing their hands! Gross gross gross!

                    Re: E-coli in prepackaged salads!

I see it all the time here Mog. We share a washroom with another company down the hall. The women from that office don't seem concerned with personal hygiene. So that freaks me out. Now I know why my old boss used to always use a paper towel to open the door. I thought she was a nut since I assumed everyone over the age of 3 knew they should wash their hands. Apparently I was wrong.

This morning a guy was blowing his nose without the aid of a tissue. I said "ew, gross, that's disgusting, need a kleenex?" not too loud but dh said "ssshh, that's our neighbour". All the more reason for him not to be doing disgusting things in his front yard. I mean, he was 3 feet away from the front door. Was he having a nose-blowing emergency that he couldn't get to a tissue in time?

That's an awesome idea! I actually saw someone has invented a little quilted seat, for the part that you put a toddler in, and the material comes up and over the handle so the baby doesn't bite/touch it as well. I thought that was a great idea.

There used to be a Sr. VP at my last company that never washed her hands and used the throw her purse/coat on the bathroom floor. I used to wonder being a sr. vp how many hands she shook in a day? she was a nutjob.

OMG people can be so disgusting! Where were they raised? Even worse, we had a cook at one of the restaurants I used to work at, on more than one occassion I had a male customer come to me and tell me that they just saw in him the bathroom and he didn't bother to wash his hands! And he was friggin cooking! I could never eat there! Ick!

Sadie, I just saw one of those cushioned seat thingy's for the babies when I was at the grocery store yesteday! I though "geez, what a spoiled little pampered brat" LOL, I had no idea it was susposed to keep germs off of the kid! Cool.

LiR, a guy that used to work with John was digusting like that, John said he would hold one nostril shut and just blow his nose out into peoples yard...Poor John, he said it would make him gag. Nasty nasty nasty!

John wears surgical gloves when he's working! Maybe I should start wearing them to the grocery store?

Sometimes it's better not to examine our world so closely. The more you look, the more (disgusting things) you will see.
You are better off wearing rose-colored glasses. For instance, I used to frequent a sefood restaurant my brother bussed tables at, and always ordered cole slaw with my fish. Until the day my brother saw the hairy italian stirring the big bucket of slaw with his arm immersed to his elbow and told us (eating at the restaurant at the time). Whether I knew he washed his hands beforehand would not have made a difference what I took home in my mind that day. ICK!
