It think it was too easy to break into a car if they had those. I know when I locked my keys in the car a couple of times you could easily stick something in there and pry the little lock over and open that window so you could reach inside and unlock the door. That's just my guess though.

Is that the same thing as a swamp cooler (or somthing like that?)

I only just learned about them recently! LOL, I have a friend here at work who used to live in Arizona, that's the only reason I had heard of them. See here, we have to have air conditioners to remove the moisture from the air or we will have some serious issues with mold and mildew in no time flat! In fact we have a small window unit in our basement for that sole purpose, otherwise eveything down there would be ruined. You have the opposite problem with dry air.

I can relate to the schools with no a/c, only the library had it (think they wanted you to study extra time), the little triangle windows with the smoking parents, and how about how the seats were made out of vinyl making you stick to them from sweating. Even with my a/c running most days I can't get my house under 80 degrees. Its too dang hot!

My A/C can't keep up with the heat - before the air gets to the 2nd floor through the furnace ducts, it's warmed up - so the upstairs stays so hot I'm sleeping downstairs on the sofa the last 3 days.

                    Re: Air Conditioning

We have central AC in our house. We also have fans circulating the air. My son has been spending his time dowstairs in the rec room/play room area. He complains it hot when he comes upstairs....now understand, it's about 74 upstairs with no humidity. I will have a sweater on at times up here, but he thinks it's hot since he's playing where it's in the mid 60's most of the day.

I'm a teacher and only the newest schools in our district have AC. The main school I was in did not have it. Our district hasn't closed because of extreme heat since I've been there. It would be nice if they did, but they don't.

Only newer schools, mostly in the burbs or outlying areas here have a/c too. Most city schools don't from what i'm aware. I went to my stepdaughters grade 8 grad that was held in their gym and was way overcrowded. the principal's first line was 'welcome to our oven'.

We have central air, our summer is short, but hot. I couldn't live w/o it..i need my sleep...

Same here. I had the thermostat set at 76 degrees yesterday and it stayed around 87 degrees during the warmest part of the day. The a/c couldn't bring it any lower. Whew! I think we will need a better a/c once this one goes!

P.S. The room with the two computers is also the warmest room in the house.

Yea, my computer room doesn't have air or a fan in it either.

When I was a kid none of our schools here had air conditioning. Now everyone of them has it! It may have a lot to do with all the transplants from the north that have steadily moved here over the years. I don't think that Yankees are prepared to handle summers like we have here! I know my relatives from upstate NY sure can't handle it when they come down for a visit!

I just got my electric bill, and it's over $200. Grrrrrrrrrrrr stupid inefficient central air.

I have central air in the main house and a window unit in the addition. My electric bill came yesterday - $159.00 I'm happy, because that same addition costs more in the winter because it's got electric heat. It's more to heat it than it is to cool it! WAY MORE!
