Can someone please tell me

where fruit flies come from ? And, more importantly, how to get rid of them? I swear, the minute I buy fruit, BAM they appear. They're grossing me out.

I'm sitting here eating yogurt and one just fly down out of NO WHERE and landing on the container! <gag>

They lay eggs in the fruit and when the eggs mature they come out and fly around your kitchen. See you need to eat the fruit (and eggs) before they mature. Do you feel better now?

I would prefer to believe they spontaneously appear than the whole egg thing ...they drive me nuts!!! and this is the time of year they are out of control!!!

They what? <holding back the bile> I've all ready been this close <holding thumb and pointer finger an inch apart> to throwing up this morning. Oh god...that's disgusting! I leave my tomatoes out, my bananas and avocado's out..oh, and my lemons..

What the <fill in the blank> am I supposed to do to get rid of them?

Oh man.... I just didn't need this nastiness today! But, thanks for the SECOND link. LOL I did manage to open that one. There are some good ideas in there. I think I'll try the bottle trick.

Oh my good god. I may never eat fruit again after reading this. I mean, deep down I knew the flies had to be there from the beginning but my brain wouldn't let me process it. Now I am so ill I think I may skip lunch. UGH UGH UGH. We have some ripe bananas down stairs (for my daughter, I'm still cheat free on induction) and was going to bake for her but now I think I'll toss them...just the idea.... EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

What if you wash the fruit as soon as you get it home from the store. Would that kill the eggs and get them off before they have a chance to hatch (and before you eat them)?

last year i was almost infested with the stupid things. I threw all teh fruit and and it didn't help. I found a site on the internet that explained why...they will also breed/live in drains. they recommend keeping your drainplug in when you're not using your sink..that helps.


And a surefire way to get rd of them...put a winebottle Or any bottle really, in your kitchen with about 1/2 " of wine in it and the lid off, they'll fly in and stay..when you get a bunch put the lid on and toss it. Keep doing that till their gone. This has always worked for me.

I suppose maybe fruitjuice would work too..but i usually i have more wine bottles around than fruit juice LOL.


sorry edited to add: you put tape on the top of the winebottle and cut a small hole in it, then they can't get in but not out.... i should have mentioned that..if you don't you'll just have drunk flies fliying around lol
