Well now, which ever came first would be what it is all about, now, wouldn't it? Ok, so a little legwork tell us Hokey Pokey is American stemming from the British Hokey Cokey. (I found this at eblah.com):

Historically, the Hokey Cokey, was a mimicary of the Roman Catholic Mass during the 17th century, when Mass was prayed in Latin and the priest faced the altar. The words Hokey Cokey is a corruption of the words "Hoc est corpus" or "This is my Body".

Basically, all the gestures involved in the Hokey Cokey was to ridicule the Roman Catholic Mass:
Arms in and out (priests arms uplifted in prayer)
Turn yourself about (priest turning to congregation to offer the consecrated host);
Knees bending (genuflection);
and so on.

I know nothing of its origin, I just know its a song that is plated at childrens parties and is all about "sticking your left leg in, your left leg out, in out in out and shaking it all about, you do the hokey cokey and you turn around", and that is what its all about. (apparently)

Not forgetting the

"Knees bend, arm stretch a ra ra ra".

Ah, well, there's the difference. I've never heard this in our version of the Hokey Pokey. Of course, that could just be a Canadian thing.

Hokey Cokey sounds like something adults do at Hollywood parties (involving mirrors and dollar bills and such).

The hokey cokey in england is a childrens thing.

But you are in Canada, LIR and I dont suppose the Rolling Stones have released their version yet have they :-p

Hee hee. I love Mozart. Wolfie!!!! I don't have the hokey cokey/pokey on my Amadeus album though. Oy! I said album. Well it is an album. You've probably never seen one (young whipper snapper that you are). It's like a big black CD. With grooves. (I think Rod Stewart invented it)
