  • Pet Owners!!!!!!!

One of my co-workers was hiking over the weekend with her family and came across a dog who was overcome by heat exhaustion. The dog's owners were there frantically trying to cool the dog with water from a nearby creek. My co-worker and her family donated part of their water supply to the poor doggie. Doggie was brought to a local animal hospital and she doesn't know how he did there.

So please, please, please, please, if you own a cat, dog or other animal be aware that they can suffer from heat stroke/heat exhaustion just like we can on hot days.

If you bring them with you to places during hot weather, make sure you have enough water for the two of you.

My cat Stinky has the pleasure of A/C and canned cat food and the only walking he does is between the bed, the box and the bowl, which are affectionately called the 3 B's
I am trying to get him to lose weight. I took him to the vet for ear mites and the nice vet lady said "normal cats weigh 9 pounds....yours weighs 30! I just thought he was lazy. So I have only been feeding him 1/2 can in the morning the other 1/2 in the evening. He hates it but I think he lost a little cuz when I pick him up now I dont blow out a disc.

I could only imagine the panick of those dog owners. My pets are members of my family and I would be terrified if they got sick like that.

My dog is very fluffy- chow/sheep dog - so I take extra care with him in the heat.

Tommy, it is really hard to diet a cat (as you're finding out)! Two of our 5 are big cats, they weigh about 16-17lbs each, but they are big framed, and the vet said not overweight. Raymond is 58cm from nose to tail and then you add 35cm of tail! He can put his paws and chin on the kitchen bench when he stretches up (he uses this legnth to great advantage!). Marmaduke is stocky and has very heavy bones. The other 3 are delicate little souls of 5-6 lbs each (all females).

Does your cat like to play. Those toys on the end of sticks are good, you hold one end and wave the other in front of the cat and they are supposed to get exercise chasing it. I have noticed, however, they only do it when they want to!

On the water front, ours were never big drinkers. Then I bought a plain whatie china bowl with a blue rim at the op shop. Warwick put it down for the cats and it is like the magic water bowl. They ALL will drink from this bowl and no other. God knows what will happen if we ever break it, there wil be a cat mutiny. Dogs are far more prone to heat exhaustion and dehydration because they run about so much, particularly when they are out with their people.

You have great pet names It does seem hard for him to lose weight I mean when I free fed him dry food he never ate a ton but he ate all day long in little bits. I thought by having 2 feeding times would help and I think it has but not as much as I had hoped. He doesnt play much and he tires quickly but I think I will go make one of those fishing rod toys (I work in pops tackle store lol) and see how he feels about that. Thanks for your advice!

                  Re: Pet Owners!!!!!!!

Well, if you were Jill's Uncle you might have an easier time. Our big orange cat, Oliver, likes to play with my dd's doll clothes. We come home every night to find doll purses, shoes, hats, etc. all over the front hall. He's still kind of chubby, but not as big as when we got him from the Humane Society. We have two cats so they play with each other a lot (mostly at night....while the rest of us are trying to sleep). Our vet said they should only be fed twice a day and the bowl should be lifted after 1/2 hour. One reason is for weight management but the other reason is because they should have their stomachs empty for a period of time so as to prevent UTIs. Most people/animals don't keep their stomach full every minute of the day. So it should be with cats.

We have an American Eskimo dog too. He doesn't like long walks in the summer so we keep them short and bring water. In the winter however....watch out baby - my 8 year old dog acts like an 8 year old kid bounding through the snow. Heee.

                    Re: Pet Owners!!!!!!!

That poor dog...hope he's okay now!

Our dog is a pug, a short-nosed breed. We have to be careful when taking her out on hot weather, because she has breathing problems already with her tiny squished (and adorable) nose.

Dogs don't sweat and can only pant...water isn't always going to keep them cooler but it will help keep them hydrated. For extreme weather, pet owners have to realize when it's just too hot for our fur-covered friends.

Hope the doggie is doing fine now. I hate it when people aren't caring of their pets. No empathy at all.
Sometimes I see cars parked in the sun, here in Italy...with dogs inside and the windows closed. The other day (it was ouside the supermarket) I was just about to go in and get them to page the owner of the car, when she turned up. I told her her dog was in an oven there...and she just said she was only in there five mins. Five mins in the heat we're having (high nineties/hundreds) is torture! Poor animal with such an owner!

                        Megs,

I was going to ask, if your co-worker found out anything about that poor doggie, but part of me doesn't want to know (i.e. if the poochie didn't make it)

God forbid, I don't know what I would do if something happened to our "Girl".

Gizzie got it once a long time ago. She's so short and close to the hot pavement, not to mention furry and black! I learned my lesson! We don't even go for walks in the summer - its way too hot for her here. If she gets hot she will just lay down and not go any further! Now we just keep her in the yard in the grass when she has to go out!
