• Kiddo's first "Sad Face" from school

Hey guys! Good afternoon to everyone.

This afternoon I went to pick up my 4 yr old from school ( Pre-K) he's been in school 2 weeks now and today I got home and looked at his folder he has a face...the first one ever.. right below that is says " Off Task " ... This totally threw me off, I was one disappointed ( which I do feel bad saying) I don't really know how to go about the issue. ( First time mom ) and single....

I asked him what happened at school? he says that he's sorry that the teacher didn't give him a happy face. I had to rush off and go to work but I told him we'd talk about it tonite when I got home.

I need some advice, some input or suggestions on how to handle this - tomorrow I plan on talking with this teacher so I know what happened and go from there.

Aww, I think that's a bit harsh, considering he's only 4 and it's pre-k!

No yelling at the poor teacher she already has to put up with a bunch of 4 year olds..

But he is a really good kid for the most part...

Any Moms with some advice?

Single mom here... Yes, teachers get impatient at times and have bad days. Take the sad face lightly. There will surely be more, because no one is perfect. Unless it comes with a phone call or bad note from the teach it's probably very minor, like did'nt finish her finger painting or something on time. Frownies come for things like throwing things, hitting, biting and being disrespectful, too.

Thank you guys for all your responses...

I just got off the phone with him and he said " Mommy I promise i'll bring a happy face home tomorrow" ...

He sounded so sad, my poor baby - I didn't know if to make a big deal about it or just blow it off ... I talked to him so he know he should behave in school.

Re: Kiddo's first "Sad Face" from school

what was the reason behind the sad face sticker?
oh my heart goes out to your little guy, give him big hugs and tell him not to worry - everyone gets sad face stickers once in a while - even mommy's. tell him we learn from our mistakes and then tell him you love him and are proud of him for telling you what happened.
I agree with Tommy and Heidi - he is too young to be given a sad face sticker - and personally I don't care if the teacher has to deal with a hundred 4 year olds - thats her job and she best not take a bad day out on my kid or she'll have to deal with me.
See why she gave it, and then maybe suggest gentley that she not give him anything other then positive feed back - praise when he does good and remind him when he does wrong - don't give a sad face sticker and make him feel sad.
let us know what happens.
to you. Its not easy being a parent - and being a single parent is harder.

Re: Kiddo's first "Sad Face" from school

Oh, he's such a cutie!

Being a teacher-in-training myself, every education class I've taken we've had Early Childhood Educators (Preschool & Kindergarten) mixed with Elementary Ed. Teachers as well. The first thing we learn is....never ever send home negative notes. If anything state the negative and bring a postive with it no matter what! There's always room for making postive out of a negative...even if the kid is climbing the walls and eating glue.

I'm sure the teacher was just trying to inform you as the parent, and your right, to know how your child was in school. "Not on task" sounds like he was busy doing other things. At the age of 4 what kids doesn't have things to do?? How about sending a note home that's not so generic that says, "Johnny was enjoying other things besides his work today. Tomorrow we're looking forward to learning our ABC's and 123's instead of...(climbing the walls and eating glue)".

Okay, I'm all wound up for ya. LOL. I'm sure the teacher meant well and your son is a charm. Lots of hugs and kisses with what you alredy told him about being a good kid and he'll be good as gold...well, he's a boy and he's 4. As good as he can be with that cute smile of his. Tomorrows a new day

Ps...you're such a great mom to care and call him on the phone to talk to him

Thank you Lady H & Lisa!!!
I had been stressing out about it all day - I don't want him to be a slacker in school..
Should I take away his laptop for a few days?
No Cartoons?
Punishment???

You guys make a lot of sense I will just talk to the teacher tomorrow find out what happened and talk to Chris about not doing that again and listening to the teacher.

He is only 4, you have really helped me out on this...more than you know...my thoughts were just racing in my head ... how should I handle this? what should I say to him? it's so much better to talk about it get some input - make this so much easier...!

Thank you all!

Re: Kiddo's first "Sad Face" from school

Being a mom is just a job and a half sometimes, isn't it? You're doing great!

Glad you're going to chat with the teacher. I bet it was a case of Chris having fun and being 4. He's too cute!

Punishment? Unless he was swinging from the chandeliers and pulling the fire alarms I think it's safe to say he's got the idea that he needs to learn how to pay attention to the teacher. I think with a great mom like you he'll know that being a slacker makes mom sad and he'll do all he can to do his best in school so he can be a great doctor, lawyer, scientist, or even go to the moon. Okay, so I've spent a little too much time in kindergarten. lol.

Keep us posted.

La La, is this the thread you want moved to the Womens forum? Do you still want it moved? PLease let me know, as it seems that you have had a lot of good suggestions here, without it needing to be moved.

However, if you want it placed somewhere different, please let me know.
