    Re: 9/11

I live and work in the DC metro area. I still remember how that morning, the rest of the day and the weeks after were.

However, I don't need Matt Lauer, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, etc. etc. to tell me about it. It kind of angers me that all this media re-hash is an attempt to win ratings for dying network news programs.

Should we remember? Yes. Should we give proper respect to the memories of those who died? Yes. But I don't think we should dwell upon it endlessly. We need to move on, learn from our mistakes and apply our lessons to the future, imo. Otherwise, it will emotionally cripple us as a society.

And please, please, please, do NOT start "9-11 Day Sales 50% off every purchase" stuff. Retailers already have New Years Day, President's Day, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas...do they really need another day?

Yes, I can feel the sadness in the air.

It is also my parent's anniversary and if they were alive they would have been married 61 years.

A sad day on both accounts.

I agree as well. CNN is the worst offender, they were actually doing a minute by minute retelling of the accounts this a.m. We don't need that, it's not healthy IMO.

HBO showed a special they did on 9/11 awhile back. It was so sad and it made me mad. I wanted to see a follow up on how we went into Afghanistan and Iraq. I guess I shouldnt feel vengeful but I cant help it.

Yeah those guys are tools. I was thinking we might see a new installment in the future called Iran.

Its good that they showed that special because too me it is better too not forget what happened then too not remember and that vividly jogged my memory.

Today is an important and happy anniversary for me, for another event. And I can't help feel glad that it is... at least one good thing came on such a tragically shocking day five years ago.

But it's still a day of bittersweet contrasts for me.
I can imagine how much harder it hit home to you Americans... though it doesn't seem possible that it could be harder...

                          Except for cooking shows right?

Sorry if I came off a little too harsh, but I get a distinct vibe from the tv programming that this is tv ratings blitz: you know "Ooooo...let's show all the horror and terror, so we get more ratings!" And it's that kind of exploitation that really gets to me.

My heart is still sad, but today it goes out to all the folks killed in wars and by terrorists. Before 9/11 we had Oklahoma City and folks have forgotten about those trajic deaths, and Pearl Harbor was also a terrorist act. We need to learn to love one another.

Truly, though, with all due respect, I am more in agreement with Jacksuncle. Yes, it's hard to watch and yes, it's so so painful. But we all said we wouldn't forget and I'm afraid that yes, we may have forgotten just a little.

It scares me that the threats are still ongoing. And the way DH always puts it ... we have to be lucky all the time and the terrorists only have to get lucky one time.

I guess the REAL point I'm trying to get to is I'm afraid that any complacency will come back and bite us in the you-know-where. And I'm just afraid ....

Kkat, sorry it's a double shot for you!
