• Spelling & Grammar Online

I don't know if I'm a fuddy duddy at 30 years old or what, but sometimes when people post online, I just can't read it.

The spelling errors and the poor grammar. I am talking about situations when it's clearly not a typing error. I'm talking when the same word is spelt wrong over and over.

And what is worse - people get really pissed off and defensive about it.

Here I have to learn to read and write, but also I am required to be understanding about their laziness?

Hey I'm not perfect either, but I try!

And it seems to happen a lot with the younger ones these days. Where is the English language headed?

LOL looks like the spelling police need to go back to school.

And Dave they have done studies that show that the average human brain can read mistypoed and mispelled words in paragraphs as long as the begining and end letters, and word shape are the same as the intended word since the huiman brain does not read letters but shapes of groups of letters making up words.

ther is the clasic example many here have seen in one of MOGs topics

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe. ceehiro.

Should be SPELLED.... for the record, this is one of my pet peaves/

Spelt is a grain, and is not allowed until Rung 7.

Actually it is spelt; spelled is a bastardized (American) version that has become accepted.

If I were writing a letter I would be concerned, as this is a forum, who cares about the odd typo!

Well, yeah, it does irk me too. I don't think I've seen that much on here, though. But I do shake my head when I read things from my teenagers' friends. I wonder if they'll ever "get it". And since I'm anal....I do spot the errors when I read things, even when I'm not trying.

I did not claim superiority or to be perfect.

Hmm so that's another one of those American/English/Australian differences.

                          I know what "np" is.

Btw I would say "spelt" aswell.

                            Re: Spelling & Grammar Online

I think a lot of the problem with grammer/spelling comes from the instant messaging, etc., generation.

However, and I wish I could find the link, there was a site that showed pictures of misspelled signs, and the guy dubbed himself as the grammer police, and issued fake "fines" for such horrid unprofessionalism.

Signs are one of my biggest peeves - if someone chooses to display to the community their lack of spelling - well, then, they deserve to have someone issue them "grammer fines".

And, no, I am not perfect, but I really try and proofread my messages before posting.

I can't stand when folks type an incredibly long post with no punctuation, and no paragraph breaks. Very difficult to read.
