  • Death of a pet

Sombersusie and I are in mourning. Our favorite, most personable rabbit died tonight. He would run to the front of cage as you went by just to be petted. I didn’t think I would care this much for a rabbit when I have hunted his cousins as a boy. I didn’t cry as much as I did for Bo, our first dog, or even Lucky, but dangit, doesn’t it hurt to lose something you love.

Oh, my heart goes out to you! Remember the good times and know that he was a happy, well loved rabbit. He/she had a good life. It's the good times that count most.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I was so sad when my hamster passed on many years ago. It was odd coming home (I lived alone) and not hearing her jumping around in her little home.

Your rabbit lived a life surrounded by love...and that's a thing that makes a world of difference to pets. Here's a hug for you --> ((hug))

                  Re: Death of a pet

That's our thought this morning. We gave Dutch over 3 years of happiness (or as much as we could) of being able to run through the house, run around our feet, and run away when he knew it was time to be put away. We gave him a bunny friend to play with and chase around the cage. We gave him the opportunity to be licked by a fluffy white dog, who could never figure out if they were toys, friends, or food. A lot of stuff that a bunny from an animal rescue place probably doesn't have hope for when they are given up. His cage mates may have made it out and were adopted, but we at least gave him a life.

                      Re: Death of a pet

I'm so sorry to hear that Pets are very difficult to lose. I lost my guinea pig in 2003, after having him for 5 years, but what made it more difficult was that I got him when I was at my lowest, and suffering a lot of depression, so I doted on him, and he really helped me to pull through.

Then I lost my dog last summer (2005) That was hard, because he was moved over to Washington DC from the UK, but I came back, and he stayed there. I hadn't seen him in a year apart from pictures, so getting a phone call to tell me he'd been put down was terrible. He suffered from just about everything, from arthritus to cancer. So many times before, the vet suggested we put him down because the cancer was just too much for him, but he kept going, and lasted about 7 more years. Happy years, at that. He was a rescue dog, my other dog, who we found under a car in the street as a puppy, had the best of everything! How many dogs who have been abused get to move 3000 miles away? To the US? He was so much happier there - the heat made it easier on his joints, and everything was peaceful, and there was a lake he could go swimming in whenever he wanted.

                      I miss them both lots.

I would love to get one, but unfortunately, my whole family have allergies Our guinea pig was bad enough, I had to handle him all the time as nobody else could go near him, but we didnt know until we got him that they all suffered. As for the dogs, I didn't live at home because everyone was so allergic to them! I had to live in my friends house after she moved to the US.

I did suggest to my mum that I get a dog and just shave it bald, lol, but she wasn't having any of it lol

What about a hairless cat like on Austin Powers? Heee. I know you can get low allergen dogs but they are going to be a bit spendy. I like the idea of rescuing critters in need, but the low allergy ones aren't usually abandoned. Well....fish are allergy free....
