  • Do you have a Peripheral Brain?

When I worked in a hospital the medical students and residents use to carry "peripheral brains": little notebooks with information they copied from books or information told to them. They used these notebooks as a quick reference.

I'm a book-nut and I'm addicted to 'do-it-yourself' tv programs. So I'm constantly jotting down quotes, recipes, miscellaneous facts on pieces of paper, hoping they will "come in handy" one day. More often than not, those pieces of paper end up folded and crammed into my desk or bookcases and are eventually thrown away.

So I recently started to keep a "peripheral brain". I have one for recipes/gardening tips and another for miscellaneous facts, quotes, rhymes.

Anyone else keep a peripheral brain?

I'm quite the nut when it comes to keeping notebooks. I am always printing out things I find helpful, or think will be useful later. Of course, I've printed lots of Aktins recipes...but I print out lots of things for hobbies and games. It got to be so many pieces of papers, I had to buy some 3 ring binders...ROTFL!

Re: Do you have a Peripheral Brain?

I've been saying for many years when faced with the potential embarrassment of being seen fumbling through wads (or mountains and heaps) of papers for some tidbit of information "Pardon the mess - it's my brain. I've got a mind full of junk!" "It's in here somewhere" Then *POOF*, I inevitably come up with it, because I have to keep each piece. Even an otherwise indecipherable original scribble can retrieve volumes of memory, only to me of course. But it's nice to have my wad when I can't remember at 8am what I jotted down to do tomorrow morning the evening before!

Re: Do you have a Peripheral Brain?

Oh heavens! I lose so much 'reminder' stuff, scribbled on post-its and other bits of paper. The only notebook I use is for my writing (a hobby). I tend to jot down good words or phrases or happenings, so I won't forget them. Maybe I should extend that into full blown peripheral brain status!!

Re: Do you have a Peripheral Brain?

I'm also a note nut. I have several shorthand notebooks. I keep my weight loss tips on 3x5 cards and filed in about 3 little plastic recipe boxes. I have notebooks for my writing, character descriptions of people, submissions, sales, and so forth. I have notes for household tips and ideas, I have notes for inspirational quotes and more. You get the picture. I have notes and quotes and bits and pieces of information on just about everything. My bookcase has a whole shelf with nothing but notebooks.

Re: Do you have a Peripheral Brain?

I never thought of calling it that, but I do have a small notebook that goes almost everywhere with me. I'm kind of scatter-brained at times, so my book is my "back-up".
