  • Cable vs. DSL internet...what's better?

We're having awful problems at home with our DSL.

We use a Linksys router, which we think may be the culprit, and our connection dies quite often. Not only that, but the computer that's hooked to the router only, loses it's connection all the time! The computer hooked up to the modem/router loses connections too, but the other one is more frequent.

    Is cable more reliable?

Re: Cable vs. DSL internet...what's better?

is it your actually dsl that's disconnecting or the router? I've never used dsl but know people that do, have linksys routers and have no issues otehr than the very rare occaision where they have to reset the router. I have a microsoft wire less router with cable internet and do have to reset it maybe once every 2 or three months, though that's the router and not the cable.

Have you doble checked the router setup etc (though i'm sure you have)? Is the router new and if not have you had issues with it before you had dsl?

I've had both, and haven't had a problem with either. We use cable right now, just because we didn't want to be bothered with having a home telephone.

We have digital cable, internet, AND phone service, all from our cable company. We got a really great deal on it, and have had no problems with our service.

My computer is connected to the modem, which is connected to the router. Cory's computer is connected to the router. (mind you, I'm not home so I can't confirm it).

We have to re-set the router every other day it seems. When you say check the router set up, what do you mean?

We got the router at the end of December...we've had issues for months.

Maybe it's a faulty router we have.

Are you using Comcast? We have Earthlink, but thinking about switching maybe.

so one thing you can try, if possible, is removing teh router for the time being and have your dsl run directly to your computer for a couple of days and see if you still have the issue. That will rule out it being your dsl provider. If it is the router i can't imagine it would help by switching from dsl to cable.

hmmmmm wait, your pc is connected to your modem? You might want to dbl check that. I think: your dsl modem should connect into to your router wan or modem input, and both of your pc's should connect into the router if i remember right. Though it's easier when actually looking at it then trying to remember in my head LOL .

I'll have to double check that tonight. I tried every combination possible and that was the only one that worked...I might have hooked it up weird LOL!

I have a feeling it's the router...that thing has been nothing but trouble.

One reason we were thinking about changing is we've had weird things happening to the phone line. If anyone uses the front door buzzer, kicks us off the net and it takes forever to re-set everything. Plus, the phone jack in the kitchen is messed up...even without the DSL filter. But switching to cable would cost quite a bit money!!

I have the same prob!!! I am using DSL and the linksys router and the main pc that connected to the router looses connection all the time I have to just hook the cable directly to the main pc and bypass the others till my hubby can mess around with it and fix it. Not sure why it does it!

Thanks everyone for all your responses. I think it is definitely the router causing problems. I unplugged/replugged it and the net was back up just like that. Shouldn't have to do this every other day, so we need to get a new router. What a pain in the bum!

I've had to unplug/replug the router in the past as well...although sometimes it doesn't work for hours...then it will suddenly be back up.

Hubby's computer, which is plugged into the router only, continues to get disconnected from the router.
