Study: Office Bullies Create Workplace 'Warzone'

The office might be far from the playground, but it’s not off limits to bullies. From a screaming boss to snubbing colleagues, bullies can create a “war zone” in the workplace.

In a recent study, bullied employees likened their experiences to a battle, water torture, a nightmare or a noxious substance. Understanding the seriousness of workplace bullying and what it feels like to get bullied could help managers put the brakes on the behavior, shown to afflict 25 to 30 percent of employees sometime during their careers.


“Many Americans are familiar with sexual and racial harassment, but not generalized workplace bullying,” said study team member Sarah Tracy of Arizona State University. Bullying can lead to higher company costs including increased employee illness, use of sick days, and medical costs, ultimately affecting productivity, she added.



Workplace bullying can include “screaming, cursing, spreading vicious rumors, destroying the target’s property or work product, excessive criticism, and sometimes hitting, slapping, and shoving.” Subtle behaviors, such as silent treatment, disregard of requests and exclusion from meetings, count as bullying.

I will never understand it...sometimes it's because of rudeness, sometimes snobbery, other times it's from who knows what. I just spoke with someone today who has symptoms of all of the above.

In the next cubicle over, I heard a coworker talking about my hairdresser who moved, and so I popped my head around the corner and asked about it. I asked if she knew where [name] went, and got a rock-faced "Yes."

Oooookay.

Followed up with "Where'd she go?" Another stone-faced reply to answer my question, and only my question. Just like the previous reply. Lately, she's been a witch to me and I don't know why because I've never done anything unkind to her.

I know I'm an oddball, but at least I try to be friendly to others rather than acting like a snob.

Okay, end of rambling. It just really gets on my nerves how some people can be like that. I just can't understand what people get out of being mean to others.

She's probably jealous of your fabulous weighloss and notices what a cutie you are...and SHE probably thinks herself to be fat...and many other terrible, horrid, things...so, I vote for jealousy, insecurity, and stupidity. A lethal combination!

Leave a large twig in her chair. When she calls out from her satancubeofdoom who left it, you could answer, while typing or looking busy from your adoracube, "Oh looook! That must be the stick that finally fell out of your butt. Congratulations on that."

People tend to be mean because they signed up for the "God pooped in my Malt-O-Meal" club. When someone flips you some lip, flip some back! Say, "Yeah. I was just wondering where she went. It's obvious you have a major HAIR up your butt you need styled."

Ca-ching! Score one for the cute, mousy brunette in cube numbah twooooo!

It's moments like these I'm grateful to have sleep insomnia.
