Friday is the 10th of November - there's a bank holiday because its my birthday. Yes its true. Thats the reason everyone has off on the 10th - I was born. I'm special. Unique and am celebrated the world over

posey day, I remember this, You very rarely see a vet or the wife of a vet with poseys outside of the post office. I have one I purchased nearly 10 - 12 yrs back at the post office in downey. Have it in my bible.

Yes we also observe Rememberance Day here as well. We observe 1 minute of silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, and rememberance ceremonies are held accross canada.

We have a very big poppy campaign here. Our Royal Canadian Legions sell the poppy pins everywhere. The money raised benefits our Canadian Veterans and Legion activities that support them.

This significance of the Poppy can be traced to international origins.

The association of the Poppy to those who had been killed in war has existed since the Napoleonic Wars in the 19th century, over 110 years before being adopted in Canada. There exists a record from that time of how thickly Poppies grew over the graves of soldiers in the area of Flanders, France.
This early connection between the Poppy and battlefield deaths described how fields that were barren before the battles exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting ended.

Just prior to the First World War, few Poppies grew in Flanders. During the tremendous bombardments of that war, the chalk soils became rich in lime from rubble, allowing “popaver rhoeas” to thrive. When the war ended, the lime was quickly absorbed and the Poppy began to disappear again.

The person who was responsible more than any other for the adoption of the Poppy as a symbol of Remembrance in Canada and the Commonwealth was Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae,
a Canadian Medical Officer during the First World War.

Rememberance day and the charity that goes with it is always the main charity I give to. I feel so strongly about it.

I bought one of the poppy's when I was in Newcastle for my birthday a few years back. I still have it. I knew it was for charity, didn't know which - its nice to know the meaning behind it. Thanks everyone.
