Lunchin ladies with the Red hats

Who are these people? I was at lunch with hubby today, and there were a group of older women, all wearing red hats, having lunch at a nearby table. I've seen them a few times around town. What is with the red hats? Does anyone know? They were even on an episode of the Simpsons one time.

I forgot to mention the purple dresses. Purple dresses and red hats. It looked like a joke, but I bet they take it very seriously, whatever it is that they do.

No, It's no joke. My soon to be mother-in-law belongs to the Red hat society. I'm not exactly sure what they do other than get together, wear red hats, buy things with red hats on them, and talk about things with red hats on them. Oh, i think they get together once in awhile and may even walk in parades

I think they're kind of goofy--or at least the ones I've seen/know. They're all about being independent and self-minded...so why do they all have to dress alike?

As my mom said, "why would I want to hang out with a bunch of 50 year old ladies? I want to hang out with a bunch of 50 year old MEN!!!"

actually they come from a wonderful poem written in the 1800s by a middleaged lady about how when she got old she was going to wear purpole dresses ands red hats, sit down on the sidewalk if she was tired and all kinds of other things sort of like what a little kids sasy about when I grow up

But the last part of the poem she says so that my friends will know who i amd when i am old i think I'll start wering purple now.

several womens groups were formed with this powm as the bases. they want to not worry about what society thinks about their clothes and just have some fun with their friends.

Warning

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandlas, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings

2big, I actually love that poem. I'll have to remember that. Maybe next time I see the red-hatted purple dress wearing ladies, I'll go say hello to them.
