So the bf and I have been discussing the topic. I'm very excited, but of course I'm also anxious. For you guys and girls who have given or received, how did you decide, if you planned ahead? I don't like yellow gold, and I'm open to gems other than diamonds, which is actually making it worse because i'm terribly indecisive. I definitely don't want him to spend too much, but i'd be lying if I said I didn't want something gorgeous.

    Re: Engagement Ring

When hubby and I were talking about it, he took me into a jewelry store and looked around. But then I told him exactly what I wanted (my great great grandma's wedding set) and so it wasn't too difficult after that!

Good luck on your decision - its a fun time!

      Hi Sam

I made sure I chose it, there must be nothing worse than having a ring for a lifetime if you hate it! hehe!

I knew instantly when I seen the ring - it was the one!! I wanted a square shaped, since my mums is square, and I've always loved it!

Mine is 4 square diamonds set in a square shape! And then my wedding ring has a small piece cut out so the rings sit flush together!

I think I would have liked a huge single rock!! but the budget just didn't stretch that far at the time!!

      Have fun choosing!

Exciting, huh?? I wanted to completely surprise Katie, so I took her sister to help me find a setting. I figured she knew her tastes pretty well. So she came with me and guided me, but I made the final decision.
        Good luck finding one!

My bf and I have been talking about this for years...I don't like yellow gold either, and I don't really want a diamond...but I'm letting him choose. I want something really different, maybe like a ruby--something striking. I think he knows me well enough that he can spot something and say "Oh wow, that's Julie!" He picks out awesome clothes...so I have confidence in his taste in jewelry. I am forcing HIM to choose it because he's horrible at surprises, and I make him surprise me every chance he gets!

It depends on how much you trust his taste...if he's spot on, let him pick it. If you're worried, choose it together.

Have fun shopping! Whatever you find, may it resemble the love you have for one another.

My dh proposed to me with a toy ring from the grocery store candy dispenser. It means more to me than the single solitare he bought for me later on to replace it. The toy ring is safetly tucked away in my jewelry box. I now wear my gold wedding band and my 13 year wedding anniversary band (we didn't have the funds on our 10th) that has 1 large diamond in the middle, 4 small ones on each side, and a scroll type cut out along each side of the ring.

            Happy shopping!

              Re: Engagement Ring

My engagement ring is a blue sapphire center stone, with a pear shaped diamond on either side. Set in platinum. My girlfriend is a jewelry designer, so when hubby was ready to go ring shopping, he went to her. She designed the ring, sent him to a jeweler friend of hers that is a gemologist, and he picked the stones, and then she put it together. The band that goes with is a diamond band, also set in platinum. I didn't want my ring to look like everyone elses, and it certainly doesnt. My friend knew what I wanted so she helped.

I admit, I didn't want to be disappointed so I told him exactly what I wanted. There's something about the classic round solitaire that I just fell in love with- so I told him and I got it. I don't regret not being surprised because I would have hated getting a ring I didn't like and not being able to tell him.

It'll end up as a surprise. He's utilizing his sister, and she and I are good friends, so she knows my taste. He does also, but he wants to make sure i like it.

I got a pic, but it doesn't do it justice...

It's a platinum setting, with a princess cut center stone, then it has two smaller round cut and two baguettes on each side. It's really very nice and sparles like crazy. She loved it!

                      Re: Engagement Ring

Before we got married, my wife kept changing her mind so much that I almost bought a lump of coal, thinking that it may turn into a diamond by the time she made up her mind. When I saw that wasn't going to work, I took the Marquis diamond from my great-grandmother's 1898 wedding ring and smaller diamonds from my grandmother's 1924 wedding ring, told her how many she had to work with and we went to several jewelers for ideas of settings. She finally decided and then we were married by the clerk of the circuit court with a guy paying his speeding ticket as our witness. Boy did I get off cheap!!

I am totally not a fan of yellow gold, and chose a white gold set instead. I love it! I'm not a major diamond fan, but the diamond works with the white gold. It doesn't have to be expensive to be special. Regardless what you choose, congratulations to you!

                              Re: Engagement Ring

My engagement ring was originally a $1.50 yard sale ring. I loved it but since I was losing weight so fast that it was falling off. We went bought a new engagement ring. I love it too but not as much as the original. It is the thought and love behind the original that makes it so great.

What is funny is the first night I wore my ring, I somehow had taken it off at night in my sleep. Boy was I upset. I thought I had lost it. My man was so suprised that I was upset about a $1.50 ring. He helped me look for it after he calmed me. Then he just smiled with all the love in his heart as he put the rings back on my finger. I had tucked under the blanket for safe keeping I guess.

Man do I really love my husband. Thank you for starting a thread that brought back such good memories.
