  • Rare eating disorder

I read this article, and found it fascinating...perhaps this type of disorder in the brain accounts for some problems with portion control and overeating?

    Re: Rare eating disorder

It fascinates me that people with this much of an eating compulsion can have weight controlled by a lock on the fridge. I'm skeptical - I think they'd eat soap, toothpaste and the weeds in the sidewalk if they were THAT hungry...

Good point...but maybe since those things aren't food it doesn't register...I think it's largely a visual disorder...if you see it, you eat it.

I would loathe the reduced calories...and I would HATE to not be able to cook...

Fascinating article... and rather frightening! To have this disorder to the extent that it's life threatening must be truly dreadful! Thanks for posting Juli!

Gain 20-30 pounds in a weekend? Did I read that correctly? Oh my. I can't imagine. I'm a little confused about what happens for them once they move out of that house...or do they always have to live there? I mean it sounds like something that if their access to food isn't constantly restricted, then they'll have issues.

            Re: Rare eating disorder

I work in a group home with 4 Metally CHallenged Guys.Within the company we provide services for a indivdual with Prader-Willi.It is very fascinating.Due to Confidentality I will call her Sue.Sue lives with 2 other woman with Mental Retardation. The only reason Sue lives with these women is because of her eating disorder.Other then the Prader-Willi she is a competley normal and smart person. Not to mention Sneaky as all get out...lol...they have everything from the fridge locked up to the trash cans. She has even been known to eat her Gunieau Pigs food and raw meat.It doesnt matter what it is if they can chew it they will eat it.It is quite fascinating. She sneaks out the house at night when she can and runs away hoping to steal food. She has been caught shoplifting numerous times. Now,Sue is the sweetest person but this disorder will make her do almost anything for anything that she can swallow.
            thanks for posting that article.

Perhaps for these people surgery might actually be the safest option. Heaven forbid they resort to eating the guinea pigs (actually bred for human consumption in some parts!) or worse, cannibalism! And then there's other things we would never conceive of as food, that they might try anyway, only to become poisoned. OMG

It isn't pretty - I worked for a vet awhile back and some dogs have this tendency, quite common (especially labs). Do you think we could be evolving this way as a species??

                              Boonie,

Dont take this the wrong way but since I work with people with this type of thing Surgery is NOT a option. Its a mental disorder like any other mental disorder. The honestly truley can not help them selves. As sad as it is and hard to understand that is the facts. Now the woman I was speaking of has accomlished to lose some weight and its a constant struggle.I do know that I should work in her home because her staff always loses weight.Due to the fact she is on a 800 lbs calorie restricted diet. Also some of these people with this Disorder can gain weight much easier then any of us could imagine. And that is not because of eating I dont know what the cause of that is maybe a super slow metabolism.
