  • "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas"

Which would you rather have store clerks say to you, during the season and why????

If you are neutral, that is O.K. Some in our county go Over the Edge about it!!

Re: "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas"

I like Happy Holidays actually...because not everyone celebrates Christmas! Some celebrate Hannukah, or Ramadan, or Kwaanza...I think Happy Holidays is the best message...sort of "hey I don't know what you do, but have fun doing it."

I used to visit my friend when she was living in Princeton NJ, and I used to love the way they said "happy holidays" to us, I think it sounds so nice! We used to come out of the shops all jolly!! hehe

As long as no one says Merry X-Mas! I mean we are celebrating something special.

Every clerk I've ran across these past couple of weeks have said, "Merry Christmas". It doesn't matter to me because at least their smiling behind their gritting teeth and most of them are actually nice this time of year.

these days i'm pretty much happy if they even smile at you at the checkout and say thanks for shopping.

Re: "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas"

During the holidays I tend to tell the bankers, store clerks, etc. happy holidays as I am leaving, but as it draws closer to christmas as it is now I have started saying Have a Merry Christmas, once christmas is past I will go back to happy holidays. I would not have a problem if someone told me Happy Hannaka so I don't think others would have a problem with Merry Christmas.

Re: "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas"

Personally, i am whichever comes out of my mouth or their mouth. To me it is and always will be the thought that counts, and if people are that sensitive and can't take a happiness, merriment or good wish where they get it from lol then i would send them extra as they seem to really need it. I respond positively and very gratefully to anyone wishing me any type of happiness, good wishes or merriment be it from Solictice (sp? sorry) to kwanzaa, to Haukkah, to Christmas to Happy Bah humbug, the way i see it, if they believe in something and want me to have a little piece of their happiness, merriment, or good wishes in no matter what it is, then who am i to find insult or upsetness or even a preference? I enjoy the sharing of happiness, merriment, and good wishes and all three are universal and neutral in no matter what aspect its offered. Even when people offer to pray for me to whatever god or religion they are part of, i gratefully accept because heck i can use all the help i can get!

                    Hope this makes sense.

me too. its either or. which ever pops out of my mouth or theirs. here its God Jul or when New year rolls around.....the first time you see someone, even if its in June after the New Year starts they say "Takk for den gammel" (which means thanks for the old year and the fun we had).

I don't care as long as they are friendly and smiling...acting as tho they really mean it. I usually say, Happy Thanksgiving in November, Merry Christmas in December, and Happy New Year in January.
