  • New Year Traditions share!!!

Ok I put a dollar under my door mat (prosperity)...wore red underwear(for passion) and made/ate spicy food (I made that one up because I love spicy food) to start the New Year right

do you have a family tradition/food/activity you do/did to start the New Year right?

I always eat cabbage on New Year's Day, and on New Year's Eve sleep on a brand new pillowcase for good luck. I don't remember where I first heard that one (the pillowcase thing). Not sure if it works, but it does feel nice!

          Re: New Year Traditions share!!!

In my family we buy a new pair of shoes (usually in after Christmas sales) and start wearing them on New Years day. I suppose it's to symbolize a fresh, clean and prosperous start. Not sure where that came from, I think from my Mom's side of the family, so maybe it's a German thing?

              Re: New Year Traditions share!!!

Here in Italy these are the NY traditions:

              - Eat lentils (the more you eat the more money you'll get! I reckon that for Atkins followers each lentil is worth ten...seeing as they're rather carby!!)

              - Wear something red.

              - There's a saying that goes: "Chi non ***** a Capodanno, non ***** tutto l'anno" (If you don't ***** at New Year, you won't ***** for the whole year). No prizes for guessing what single activity most people insert in the blanks!!! Lol... and it's all good exercise!!)

              - Throwing old things out of the windows to make place for new at the stroke of midnight. When I lived in Rome no one could park their cars in built up areas because people literally would chuck everything out of the window. Fridges, pots, pans, books, furniture... anything! It was really dangerous. The dustmen had a terrible time on Jan 1st. Anyway... it's a tradition that has died down a lot now, which is probably just as well as there were always injuries to people, not only cars!!

                  Re: New Year Traditions share!!!

                  Hi

We all go to my cousins at new year, and at midnight, we all go outside to welcome in the new year singing auld lang syne, then a person with dark hair must be the first in the house to let the new year in, and then he or she has to go through and open the back door to let the old year out! I think its a pretty common tradition - but we all have fun doing it!

                  Happy new year everyone

                        Re: New Year Traditions share!!!

I like wearing new clothes on New Years day. Hence I went to WallMart on the 31st. Everything I wore yesterday was new but for the shoes, but they were my favorite tennis shoes. Also, my family usually wore new denims on NYday. Don't know why, maybe its an Iowa Farmer tradition.

Also, I go to Church on NYday. It just seems to get me right again.

We used to eat Navy Bean Soup on NYday for good luck, but I have not made that in 2 yrs now.

Over the years I've participated in a number of traditions:

Collard greens with blackeyed peas at dinner Dec. 31 for luck
                              Champagne toast at midnight
Lox & bagel with leftover champagne at breakfast Jan. 1
                              New Year's Resolution(s)
Out with the old/in with the new

This year, on Jan. 1 I took several boxes of old holiday stuff out to discard. No throwing stuff out windows, but it accomplished room for some of the new stuff we got for Christmas!
I also had the champagne toast and watched fireworks from the back porch at midnight 12/31.

Mom offered the greens & peas earlier that day, but I declined, as they brought me BAD luck the last time. I'd had them at an outdoor pit BBQ, and got badly burned while spooning them, when the stump the pot was on in the pit corner collapsed, spilling the boiling liquid onto my tight laced up suede boot!
