  • Hey big guy!

So I've got this guy at work. He's a pretty friendly fellow, a bit of a blowhard but he is OK overall. The problem is that he routinely greets me with "Hey big guy". Now he's not exactly trim n' fit himself (though he's certainly in better shape then me!). I find that his greeting somewhat annoys me, not enough to really say anything I suppose, and I wonder if any of the other big guys on this board gets people saying things like that and/or if they also get annoyed by it.

On a side issue, can you imagine greeting a woman with "Hey big gal". I bet THAT wouldn't go over very well. Sexism I tell you sexism!

It offends me too when people say that. People in England too refer to people as "big guy". I am sure they dont mean anything by it, but I get it too and it still hurts me also.

Btw, I agree with your sexism comment too.

My husband's name is Ben, and he's about 6'4" and 280 pounds or so. People think they're really clever when the call him "Big Ben", like he's never heard it before. They also always assume that he's into sports, because of his size, and ask "did you see the game last night?" It really irritates him.

It doesn't bother me at all. Because I am exactly that, a "big guy", even at 200 pounds I am still a "big guy".

I once took it as a compliment, I was running a road race, it was unbelievably hot, and someone yelled out, "way to work, big man". My effort as a big fat guy trying to be a big thin guy was appreciated by a spectator. I took it the best way possible.

Get it all the time. Never has bothered me. My neice and nephew nicknamed me Big Unc years ago and it has stuck. I had rather be called big guy than small fry or shrimp, just my opinion, brady

            Re: Hey big guy!

you know I have never used the term but always thought it was meant for
"big" guys ...like my husband is 6'2" not fat just big ..broad shouldered and big boned his friend calls him "big guy" he is not bothered by it ...I thought it just meant when you were tall and large build ....or anything bigger than the person saying it ..(everyone is bigger than I am it seems I am pretty short!) ..but now that I hear this perspective it is kind of annoying ..I have never heard my husband say "hey little guy" to anyone!!! I can imagine it would be very insulting to a "little" guy to be called that!

That would irk me badly. It gets my heckles up straight away!
I'm sorry, but I get offended when people seem to think it is ok to refer to others by their size and then make remarks. It is more of a reflection of the person making the remark more than anything!
When I worked in the corporate world a fellow employee would greet me each day with a sneer and a "hello obese one" It cut deep.
I resorted to replying "hello old woman", she was 30 years older than me and that put an end to it all instantly

Hmm, not that anyone's ever refered to me as 'big girl' (Although I've had my fair share of fat comments) I was always under the impression that calling someone 'big guy' could mean a lot more than 'hey you're fat'. I've heard it used in contect such as tall guys and those older/senior/in higher authority to someone else.
