I couldn't live without one! I don't think I've ever lived in a home without one either. I put pretty much anything but bones and coffee grounds down mine. It's great for egg shells so they don't sit in your garbage pail and start stinking. I also do what Juli said and throw a half lemon down it every so often. Make sure you run the water with it as someone else said too. Have fun with it!

don't wash your hair in the kitchen sink because (GFB) you reach up for the towel or shampoo or to turn the water off and you accidentally flip the garbage disposal on your hair could get sucked in, you could smack your head on the bottom of the sink and then be stuck with your hair in the disposal and your head upside down in the sink until someone comes home to rescue you.
