  • Have you lost any jewelry?

SO I've noticed that my wedding ring is getting looser and looser. While I love that as a concrete sign of my weight loss my wife and I are getting a little worried that it could potentially slip off and get lost.

I was wondering if anyone has had this type of problem and actually had that happen. I know that you can get rings resized but that is such a big step, in my mind it's bigger then throwing your old big clothes away. I imagine it would feel pretty liberating but a little scary too.

Also I was curious, when a ring gets resized do they actually cut a piece of metal out and then meld the two ends together again, do they add in some sort of padding to make the inner diameter smaller, or what?

I've lost jewelry: earrings, rings, pins....sigh....

Anyhow, I'm waiting until I've maintained for 6 months before I resize any rings.

Well when I had to buy some rings with a larger size depending on the ring design and stone placement, more times than not they had to put on a new band, otherwise it would sacrifice the integrity of the stones/prongs.

Go to a very reputable jeweler and ask if that needs to be done, or if they can heat/cut/mold it.

Re: Have you lost any jewelry?

I haven't lost anything, first off. But I have had several rings resized for other people.

To make them larger many will stretch the ring, never do this! IF you have stones in the ring it will hurt the integrity of the setting (as was already mentioned). Always have them cut and insert new gold, platinum, etc.

Unfortunately you cannot shrink rings so the only way to make the actual ring smaller is to cut it and reweld it. Temporarily you can use and insert, which is a little plastic padding that fits inside the ring. If they cut it, make sure they avoid any engraving, some people do not pay attention to detail.

Ahhhh. OK so I'm thinking I'll get an insert for now and when I've hit goal and maintained for a while I will get it cut and rewelded.

          Thank you

Re: Have you lost any jewelry?

I just lost one of my favorites last Thursday. I'm still hoping to find it, like I did the one I lost about a month ago that showed up in the sofa. This thread just brought it to mind to check the one ring I'm wearing now, which has always been painful to gat off as long as I ca remember.

Guess What! It slides off easily now!!! I think I'll use a ring guard with any loose rings now - either a 2nd smaller ring with the large one, or a piece of split plastic tube may work - until they fit on other fingers well.

Re: Have you lost any jewelry?

I wear 2 rings all the time, a plain silver band that my mum gave me and a silver ring with 8 cubic zircona's in along the top half of the band. Both rings are alot looser since loosing weight and they all fit on any fingers and I'm constantly twindling and changing them from thumb to fingers. I once lost the ring my mum gave me and found it a few weeks later in the freezer! I lost my other one in Rome and found it in my hand bag! Its my fault for constantly playing with them but I dont know I'm doing it half the time.

Grant - Maybe u should wait until you reach goal before you resize ur wedding ring in case you need to resize it again when u do reach goal?
