  • Please help if you can!

I'm taking an anatomy class this semester (last semester!!!) and right now we're studying alllllllll the muscles. I'm a good learning via mnemonic tricks.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for remembering muscles of the body? Mainly the little picky ones, like forearm and such. I've got the major ones and all the superficial ones already down.

    Thanks!

Oh yeah, one more thing: I don't need to know innervations, but origin and insertion tips would help too.

Oh gosh, I hated origin and insertion. The thing that helped me most wast he Anatomy Coloring Book. Do you have that? You can probably get it at any campus book store.

      http://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-Colori.../dp/0805350861

Other than that, saying the names of the muscles outloud while pointing to them on my own body, same with the origin and insertion, over and over and over again, helped me.

Brain food helps too. I always took spirulina before studying and before taking a difficult test. LOL Maybe it was all in my head (no pun intended), but it seemed to work for me!

        Thanks!

Yeah, right now I'm doing the repitition thing. I have the anatomy coloring book (I had it for another class...never used it...) but I haven't really used it so far. So I'm going through everything and making my own weirdo things up to try to remember.

        Stick figure club....lol...

pick a tune you like and "sing" the muscles you are studying.
it worked for me and my friend in history class - we needed to know all the presidents and vice presidents and dates and stuff and we made a song.....during the test we were singing in our heads and dancing in our seats and both of us passed.....the teacher asked how and we said we sang our song lol
          Good Luck!

            Hi Juli!

I absolutely LOVED anatomy class, though I did not use mnemonics...I'm part of the repetition club.

I don't know if you're in lab or not, but personally, I found McMinn's atlas to be a huge help during my dissection labs. McMinn's dissections are INCREDIBLE and all the photos are in color and go into great detail from the superficial to deep . I also used Grant's atlas, but they use drawings instead of photos. Both were usefully in their own way, but I found myself referring to McMinn's all the time. The coloring book was just o.k. for me. It was too basic for me.

You may find more help at a pre-med, medical, or pre-nursing forum a lot quicker than ADBB. More folks there must take anatomy than folks here. We mostly want to improve our anatomy.

            Best of luck to you!!!!

              Thanks Bio and Lady.

The singing idea is interesting...never heard of it before

Bio: I don't have McMinn's but I do have another one, with actual dissections and cadavers. It's helpful.

              Thanks for the advice!

Really, you have a Grant's with photos?? What the ISBN on it? Mine is the 10 edition with ISBN # 0-683-30264-7 and it does NOT have photos. I'd love to add to my collection!

What degree are you working on that requires anatomy?? Just curious!

Here's a website with mnemonics on it. I don't know how helpful they will be to you, but maybe you'll find something useful.

                    Thanks Bio.

I had seen the link; there was a little help there, but most of it included stuff like innervations--things I don't need to know (yet).

The Atlas I have is Martini's. Part of the package with the textbook by the same author.

OK, I have the Martini textbook and the bundled atlas. I would be shocked if you DIDN'T have to learn innervations and such.

It's always good to see a fellow biologist!!! Forensics is such an interesting field. Will you be going on to get a masters or PhD? Very cool!!!!

Re: Please help if you can!

Well, my instruction is a post-doc, and this is her first year teaching. Perhaps the other classes have to learn innervations; I don't know.

I still have several options that I am considering. Either the Masters/PhD route or going to med school. Or maybe forensic nursing. I'm even thinking about teaching on the community college/university level, simply because over the past few years I have had some horrible teachers, and they are inspiring me to want to be a good teacher, because I know I could be

Either way, if I go to work after my Bachelors', it will most likely be research and not field-work (crime scenes). But my minor is psychology, so it looks like I'm setting myself up for a job with the state/local law enforcement of some sort.
