  • Anybody else get a bit peeved

When you tell a loved one that you're dieting and losing weight and then tell them you are going to the gym and they are super excited and happy for you?

All they can say is "I'M SO PROUD OF YOU!!! IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!"
See, I can understand at being happy and supportive, but on the other it's like telling you are and have become a big mess.

It's hard to explain. You know they love you and want the best for you, but the shock and awe in their voice is a bit over the top.

Thoughts? Or am I just overreacting?

Umm.. well, if they had said "I'm so proud of you" without the "it's about time", I would be really happy. I would rather have them behind me than not caring, or being discouraging towards me and this WoL and my goals, you know? I realize that it's not always that black and white, but given the option... *shrug* But that's just me.

i don't think you are overreacting....but......let it go in one ear and out the other. i think their intentions and excitement are well meaning.....it just sure comes out wrong! my southern tongue (which my fiance says is mighty wicked) might say something like "thank you for sharing your enthusiasm with me!.....now will you babysit while i go and work out?" ha ha ha ha ha!!!

find a nice way to let them know you think it is over the top, thank them for their support, smiling of course all the while and JUST GO DO IT!

i giggle sometimes when skinny people make comments about those who need to lose weight as if those who need to lose weight have no clue that we need to!!!! aaarrrggghhhh!!!

as my mama used to say "consider the source!"
smile....it always makes people wonder what you are up to!!

I'd just smile, say thank you, and secretly come up with 183 perfect put-downs 5 hours later when they're no good to anybody.

Oh dear! LOL!! "Proud of you" is encouraging. But the "IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!" would grate on me!

You could flip it around on them and say, "Well then, join the gym and go with me! And we can work out together!!" THEN watch them SQUIRM their way out of that one! HA!

After all, even skinny people should be exercising!

Otherwise, I wouldn't bother mentioning it unless you're refusing candy (as I did yesterday!) or are committed to working out that someone's plans will interrupt. I got testy with someone who didn't take time to consider more might be going on in my life than what she expected of me. When she FINALLY asked what I've been up to (like I had to answer to her), I firmly stated something like, "Taking care of health issues." And left it at that. I am NOT going to let others get to me and make me discouraged enough to quit. So I'm going to fight back, feelings be damned.
