I posted something in the men's forum a while ago, so this is addressed principally to the ladies. Well does he? Does he use a shaving brush? The common practice these days is to smear some hi-tech slime on and hoover the bristles off with a multi-blade cartridge razor. But its not necessarily the best or the most enjoyable way to shave. Even if the multi-blade is kept, a nice traditional lather worked into the beard with a brush can bring big improvements.
So, ladies, looking for a present for him? Buy him a brush and a nice tube of traditional shaving cream (there are soaps too, but creams are easier to use if all you've used before is foam or gel).
There are many places to buy these superior products - a good department or drug store will have some, but I link two specialist shops here - one US and one UK.

The videos linked below give lots of advice on lathering and shaving. If he likes the proper lather the brush makes the next step is to abandon the multi-blade for an old fashioned safety razor. Many men find it better after spending just a little effort mastering the skills. Men who suffer from ingrowing hairs or bad facial skin should certainly give it a try. Ingrowing hairs from multi-blade razor use are a particular problem, I'm told, for black men and others with very curly hair.
