  • My mother and Breast Cancer

Hello ladies. Do you all remember me posting a topic some months ago about my mother having breast cancer and it was stage 2? They have delayed her surgery and treatment, and wanted more tests. her surgeon was uncomfortable with just the removal of the one breast,so he orderd a full body bone scan. To our horrific and shocking surprise we had bad news.

Yesterday her surgeon cancelled her surgery which was scheduled for this morning. My mother is 74. She now is diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer which has spread to her lungs, spine, breast bone and hip bones. I am in absolute denial about this and I need help from anybody who may have had it this bad and survived or who konw someone who had it and survived. Now she is told she WILL NOT have the surgery and that she must now do more aggressive treatment. I am so sorry for my mom, she is so frightened and I dont know what to say to her. This is a death sentence and she didnt ask for it. I am just so sad. She had started doing the Atkins and was doing so well on it. Now all this is gone under the table.

Can any of you ladies please help me understand all this. I rememberd there were some ladies who had cancer and are survivors. But I want to know if anybody had it this bad or knew anyone with it this bad. I dont wnat to loose her now

Re: My mother and Breast Cancer

I am sooo sorry. I can minimally feel your pain. My mother was diagnosed with breast CA and just had her bilateral mastectomy 1 week ago Friday.
Have you done much research with the stages?
Unfortunately, I can't give you much information without knowing a little more about her condition but staging and progession depends on the lesion site and size. The one concerning me the most is the lung CA. Find out what info you can with that particular area and be optimistic.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Be hopeful, and be there for your mother.
So....I fell off the band wagon...BUT I'M BACK!!! More Ready than ever!

Thanks hon, no, I have only done some stuff online and it is all so sketchy. So I came back here figuring that someone must have had it or known someone with cancer that spread so aggressively. They said it is now stage 4 and has spread and they wont even bother to remove her breast now. I used to work radiology and that conerns me. Because usually when they dont opeate it means they will onyl give treatment and prolong life. I am just numb.

Bless you mom, I hope she is doing fine and will do fine and recover completly. God is good. I hope he listens to my prayers for mommy

Please help with any information you can help me with, or talk to friends or anybody who may have known a surviver of the stage 4 bit with progression

        PIPSQUEAK,
I am a radiology technologist in the states and yes, it concerns me also. You may know, as well as myself, how lung CA affect the body and unfortunately that is the most concerning to me. When is your meeting with the oncologist? Keep your heads high and my prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom, I know you must be terrified. I can't help you with any knowledge of cancer and its stages, but my prayers are with you and her. May God bless your family through this time.

Hi hon, is not me but my mother. She meet him at 2pm on Friday. The thing is they first told her nothing to worry about and that she will only have to remove the brast and may only need hormone therapy, not this new finding has been found. Some of the radiologists are NOT even sure about certain masts in the body, I dont understand how one can jump so quickly to conclusion. he case goes before the radiology panel next wednesday for discussion and outcome.

THanks hon, that means a lot to me. We are all terrified, becuase the more I read baout the stages online the more scared I become, and of course I am not telling her this. Elizabeth Edwareds has the same thing, Elizabeth's was breast cancer and it came back 3 years later and has attacked the bones. This type of cancer I hear is pront to attacking bones, liver and lungs

Re: My mother and Breast Cancer

Do you live close to your mother to where you can go with her to her appointment, that is what I meant to say. Do you happen to know what type of testing she has had done already? CT, MRI, Ultrasound, PET scan? Breast CA typically goes to close anatomy, such as, lung, and bone are very common unfortunately. Don't jump to any conclusions, sometimes knowing too much info via internet can scare you worse. Take 1 day at a time, I know that is very very difficult at this point. Waiting is the worse thing/feeling! I agree at this point to not tell you mother. There was many times, I knew more information about my mother breast CA, but didn't tell her because I didn't want her to get scared worse. She was already a mess. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family! Take Care of yourself! It is easy to put yourself aside in times like these. Keep yourself healthy so you can be there for your family!~ Remember, every case is different, nobody is the same. I hope the meeting with the oncologist goes well.

Re: My mother and Breast Cancer

Thanks hon for your caring reply. Yes, I try to not tell her things but then sometimes they slip out. I live EXTREMELY far away in another continent, so my sister who lives there in the same town and state will be going with her. She has had biopsy which was the initial shock that she had cancer cells and they claimed it to be stage IIB, she has MRI of the breast which revealed more tumors about 4 in all , she has full body bone scan, cat scan, xray, mammogram, ultrasound. I am sure the oncologist will order more testing. She may have to tke tumor marker blood tests, but those are not 100% or not even near 50% accurate. I dont know what other blood tests there are for this other than tumor markers.
Her radiologist who to me seems UNQUALIFIED meets with the panel next Wednesday. I do know they have cancelled the mastectomy at this point in time. As to what the oncologist will order or recommend I have no clue until she sees him tomorrow Friday, but I am pretty sure he will want to start something pretty quickly. Thanks for your support, and yes, I have neglected my home, husband and new puppy

She saw the onlcologist and he ordered her to take hormone blockers and then she must do several tests next wek, one with some kind of die to actually pin point where any cancers are before he makes a final determinatin as to what treatment she needs. I dont know if this is GOOD or bad news
