One of my job roles, is stopping hacking attacks in networks. I get weekly bulletins of shared information about what has been seen, and problem solutions. I also share knowledge, and it's a two-way thing.
One of the recent concerns was people putting their dates of birth on their mySpace and Face-book pages. People whom try identity theft, after getting some information such as your name, address, bank account number, then are using Face-book, and MySpace to get your date of birth.
Name, address, and date of birth, are the standard security questions asked by banks and credit card call centres.
The report stated that Post and Zip Codes, are often the search terms used.
If you Google not your name, but your Post Code / Zip Code, it is scary how much info comes up.
The report recommended that entering a date-of-birth on these websites, that is few days different to your actual date of birth is recommended.
Eg, if your birthday, is the 13th to the 19th change to the 21st or 22nd. Some thing that sounds different. Often call centre workers, work in high stress, and high volume, noisy environments, so a distinctive sounding difference is best.
Often, people put their date of birth, so that their star sign is displayed. Myself I am a Sagittarius. Whilst I don't give a damn about that fact, a lot of people do. Changing your date of birth on Face-book or MySpace, does not mean that you have to change your star sign, if you choose a date that's still within your star sign range.
thanks hayden, i rarely put my correct info into stuff...
so thats it... 3 people with myspace?
thats why myspace has locked me out, someone is stealing my identity. I always put the correct info, after reading that I may have to alter mine if I ever get back in. Just for the record, when you said happy birthday to me, that was really my day, with you girls i will never know if that was your correct date or not.
