                    The simple reason for this and the simple answer is purely down to the number of letters in the word. The doctors who first diagnosed the first "common cold" felt that to call it the "common hot" would not be infitting with their proffesion. back in the early days of doctoring, it was considered that all 3 letter words were likely to be banned, as it would effect the quality of education. Because of that they went with the word "cold" purely to get round stupidness of the governing bodies and dictionary compliling people at the time.

                    Needless to say they feel a little foolish now, but there you go. Oh for the benefit of hindsight!
