Re: Can you pass the UK citizenship test?

Well done on 10 Hayden - I like the immigrants fact Got to love Private Eye - I really like the Pretentious Moi? section

    For gsces I got 2 A*, 5 As, 4 Bs.

What about A'levels and degrees around here?? I got 3 a levels (AAB), a BA and an MA. Am doing Phd now - can anyone say massive geek?! Or, as some would say 'get a job'.

Emma, anyone who gets an A* in maths is amazing - I hate maths...like seriously it makes me feel sick.

I think some papers have got easier - I saw the new politics A level the year after me and it was much easier and not essay based (and I got an A, a-thank you ). Also the sheer numbers getting such high marks (and I'd include my age group) makes me think it must be easier. Also on some TV show they had some GSCE students take O'levels and their GSCEs - in the o'levels they mainly failed and in the GSCEs they got mostly As and Bs.

I got 7 right - interesting that I missed the two regarding Father Christmas! I thought that the answers couldn't be that obvious, so I picked others. The obvious answers were correct.

Re: Can you pass the UK citizenship test?

I love the Private Eye. I have an international subscription.
My favourite sections are the Eye TV, the letters page, and the colour section on the first page. However, I read it cover to cover.

                I got 10 C's and 1 B.
The B was in CDT. Craft, Design and Technology.

I then ignored the A-level route, and did a BTEC OND in Engineering. Then, for my first degree I read Engineering Science, which I got a BEng 1st Class Hons in.

Then, I started work for my company, as an Engineer.

Something happened, and I realised that I knew all about Engineering, Engineering Maths, Optical Electronics, and various other machines that go beep.
What I didn't know was how on earth the company made any money. None of my co-workers knew, they were all Engineers like me, and talked calculus and not FT.com
So, I pitched it to my manager, that I'd like to do a day release and goto business school which I did.
My second degree is in Business and Finance, which I got a modest 2:1 in.

It put me ahead of the pack. I've done some professional qualifications since then, some paid for by myself.

Now, I have some two very special network certifications. Which combined, at my last count only 32 people in the whole world have.

Many people can do what I do, or know how to do what I do. And they do. However, the big businesses need accountability, so certification is needed. My company 'lends' me out to other companies, and I work for mine. However, my job title, and a fair percentage of my salary comes from my certification.

I also think that personality is a major factor. My mother, probably, just like yours taught me manners, and how to talk to people. Working on a stage, in comedy clubs, taught me skills that use in business presentations, and business meetings. People craft.

Where are you on the "Can a manager be made", or "Is a manager only born" debate?

You're doing a PhD? I wish that more do so. Did you have problems getting funding? Can I ask what you are reading?

Will you use the title Doctor? Or still be a Ms?

I think the exam's are getting easier debate, apart from the story obviously being 'sexed up' by the media has some merit. If you look at the 11plus exam my parents did to get into grammar school, compare to then the O-levels, and then to GCSE's. You can see a downward trend.

Do we blame the slide rule. The pocket calculator? The Internet? What's 7 times 6. Quick.

A mild anecdote. My Fathers initials are D R P.
When we lived in India, my father had a new credit card issued. The credit card company by accident forgot to put a space between to the D and the R, and the whole time in India was called Doctor P.
Hotel rooms were mysteriously suddenly upgraded, etcetera.

You can of course behave like the hip hop artist. Dr. Dre.
You know, call yourself Doctor, just because, you know. You feel like it.

That is a lot of qualifications Do you have an MBA in there somewhere? Everyone seems dead keen on these at the mo.

Did you say you worked in comedy clubs? As compere or comedian? Wow to either I need more 'people craft' I get shy and blush at everything which is very embarassing in an academic environment.

I will definately want to be Dr as Dr Evil said (poss misquote) 'I didn't go through 5 frickin' years of evil medical school to be called Mr, thank you'

                    I like that Dr P.

I'm reading politics and I have a scholarship from the Uni which pays fees and living expenses at the same rate as the research council. - Very very lucky to get this - espec as wasn't the same uni as for my MA.

On the manager thing I would say that they can be made, but the born ones are probably better. But then again some managers would be better suited to some tasks or sectors than others that shine at other tasks or sectors . Nice and on the fence there... i.e. my Dad always says I'd be a terrible manager because I let people get away with murder and I'm not assertive enough, but I think I'd be good at the pastoral side, if nothing else. I'm convinced my partner would be a great manager - I'm just waiting for a big chance for him to come up. He doesn't see it though. Funny how people view themselves.

If I don't get my doctorate I'm going to have to buy a title

Good thing I'm not a brit... I only got 4 right... there goes all my hopes for british citizenship. Guess I'll try Australia. They got hot guys and warm beaches. They had the croc hunter until he got attacked by a sting ray. God love him.
