    Re: Do you like reading?

Humm, I don't actually. I handed over control to a Japanese language school, and they'll let me know.

LOL, I was having a row with my ex, once. I told her too stop being so myopic, which means seeing only a narrow vision of the nearest problem (object).

She then got more angry that I was confusing her, rather than just arguing with her. Bless.

          Hayden,

That's very impressive It must be nice to help others learn in this way. I hope the sales go well - I imagine that they would, as it seems strange that such a text didn't already exist.

I wasn't calling you on the chick lit thing - it just bugs me when people think it has to be wall to wall War and Peace (which, yes I've read ).

My BF is far too clever to be derailed in an argument by using long words - so I'm just incredibly unreasonable instead. It works for me

I LOVED Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - Dave Eggers is fab but he does get up a lot of people's noses.

I should check out Franny and Zooey - I remember enjoying Catcher in the Rye.

It was a testimonial type book that got me into Atkins (yay and phew) - I read 'The Hungry Years' but William Leith who isn't famous.

I normally find autobiographies a bit of a chore except for Wangari Maathai (Kenyan environmentalist and nobel prize winner) and Nelson Mandelas.

I know what you mean about a book weighing heavily - sometime you need a little reflection period

D'uh oh yeah! I never notice glasses.

Men don't make passes at girls who wear glasses.

Now War and Peace can really stop a wobbly table with a short leg from rocking. Truly, one size fits all.

At least Pierre is reunited with Natasha, at the end.

Back on the Japanese book, there are plenty of books written by Japanese for Japanese, people just leaving University, and never worked in an office before, unsure of protocol, or what not. Those books, the descriptions are wholly written in Japanese, and a nightmare to study with.

There might be other books like mine. I've not seen any.

Alexa, At your level of education don't you have to be published too?

Chick-lit is always in the top ten books. It's giving a lot of women pleasure, which at the end of the day, is just what's needed.

God I can't remember it - I read it when I had chicken pox (at the embarassing age of 21) and got it all muddled in my mind. I can only think of how confusing the millions of characters were...

I expect you've filled a gap in the market. Good move. Talking of Japan, have you read any Kobo Abe? I read Woman in the Dunes for a book group and it was really troubling. David Mitchell's stuff is quite heavily influenced by Japanese culture, and apparently by Kobo Abe, though I didn't see that so much. Hi Number 9 Dream, set in Japan, is also troubling. Is this a theme?

I'd hope to have some journal articles out and some point and my phd work might become a book. I have had some short stories out too, but in a very minor way.

                              Wearing glasses. There's a little Sociological U-turn.

10 years ago. Wearing glasses, meant you were all nerdy, turdy, and gitsworth.
Then we had Tom Cruise wearing glasses in Jerry Maguire, and others. Then bang, it became fashionable. People now often buy two pairs at a time.
I've seen people buy glasses with non-corrective "window" glass in them.

Any-one remember that Levis jeans commercial about 10 years ago. The man and the woman stuck in the wilderness desert in broken down car. The woman arguing with the man because he doesn't know how to fix the car.
Then this other guy turns up. Sees the problem, and takes off his jeans and uses them as a tow-rope.
How did we know that the guy turning up was clever, what visual clue were we presented with? He was wearing glasses.

Well, I wear both and I still think it's kinda nerdy. But I am nerdy so I don't mind.

I agree that it's less of an issue than it used to be - that's partly because glasses are a bit funkier and also because being nerdy isn't so criminal as previously.
