Re: A simple turn of phrase… or Words Not To Live By

The only thing I can think of right now that bugs the heck out of me is when people say "i forget" when it's supposed to be "i forgot" it drives me crazy!! And when people spell board when its bored or things like that, I have a big pet peeve about spelling. Oh and when people use "AOL" talk in person...like idk or wtf, I hate it!!

Well, don't mind an occasional swear word, but dislike it when it's every other word... as in certain movies. I was also brought up in a very strict home, so I guess now I'm still a bit rebellious. Sometimes there is nothing else to express the thought... oh darn doesn't cut it when your patient suddenly starts circling the drain. My husband and kids get mad at me for swearing, not that I swear that oftain. When I do, I get in trouble from my kids. So at least they don't.

        My pet peeves are:

        - At this moment in time (what ever happened to "now"?)
        - Passed away (what ever happened to "died"?... I also hate any other similar avoidances of death)

And a pronunciation one... I hate it when people (American women are usually the guilty ones here. Sorry Americans... I actually adore Americans and all things American, except this)... ummm, was saying: I hate it when people pronounce "Thank you" as "thenk you"... with an "e". It sounds affected to me... like raising your little finger when bringing a teacup to your mouth!

Re: A simple turn of phrase… or Words Not To Live By

I'm not annoyed by expressions that people say; however, I am annoyed by grammatical errors whether spoken or written. I don't mean little ones, but big grammatical errors. For example, the conjugation of verbs. I "brung" it. What?! That's not grammatically correct. You should have learned that in the first 5 years of your life. You accomplished the task quickly, not quick.

And my all time pet peeve: mispronunciation of words. For example, there's a little boy that I tutored and he doesn't think, he thanks! He'll say, " I thank that's right." Why??? Why does the "i" change to an "a" sound? Why? I don't understand, literally. There are times I have a hard time understanding people because they talk this way!

Sally, do you mean a short e vowel sound? or a long one? They do it here in the south.
Now I'm going to be paranoid when I speak....thanks a lot, Hayden!

              Two things I hate
              1. when someone says... now, don't take offense by this.... because you know that what follows will more than probably be something that will be offensive to you.

              2. when someone says....do you want the truth? NO, I want you to LIE to me.

I have a friend that overuses words like "infinitesimal" and "fastidious", and then after saying the word he gives you a brief definition as though he's teaching an English class. I think in an effort to appear more intelligent. It sort of makes me want to scream.

Once he said "finickity". I think he meant finicky or possibly persnickity. I'm not sure which, but either way it was amusing. He said it about 5 times when he was trying to put a hang a picture. He said the "stupid nail is being finickity". lmao

oooh...my socioliguistic/development teacher mind is having a great time with this post....

Although I enjoy reading these posts, I do hope all who have a pet peeve with language useage will keep in mind that you are on a busy, public, world-wide board with people from different cultures and different social/cultural upbringings.

That being said...I'm as guilty as the next person saying idioms and malapropisims.

                      Cheers!

I like 'I won you!' I might start saying that to annoy people

Yeah 'innit' is constant here, but people see it as being a bit 'common'. If I were to say it it would come out weird, but I like it when other people say it.

I've thought of another one that bothers me - when people overly use the word 'actually' for something that is not remarkable. Police spokespeople are particularly keen on this, like 'And what the perpetrator has actually done is...' or 'an actual offence has occured'.

I can't stand when people say "quote, unquote' even worse when the do the stupid hand signes with it.

at work...people have started saying things are 'disco': don't konw you know we don't support that anymore? it's disco
discontinued it means. can't they just say that?

the phrase: a month of sundays

ginormous..or however you spell it. cross between gigantic and enourmos i guess

most work acronyms annoy me. i work for a large company who's name is an acronym, and who have changed most phrases to acronyms. when i'm on meetings i have to look them up constantly..it's like people talk in code now.

i have never in my life heard this 'innit' thing..what is it short for?

Re: A simple turn of phrase… or Words Not To Live By

To be honest, I didn't know that innit had crossed the Atlantic.
Since whenever I've heard innit it has a rising inflection at the end, so written it would appear as a question, innit?

Until Julie mentioned. I thought is was a British expression. Mostly used by British Indian and Pakistan teenagers.
(also British teenagers copying their classmates)

I've mostly heard some people use the expression at the end of sentence. A bit like .....dude or .....man that I've heard in American English.

If I was to convert innit into English that my mother taught me. It would convert to "is that not the case?"

Working with this a little more, I can combine the is and the not. This would produce "Isn't it?".

Working with Isn't it? I can drop the s, and the t, double the n sound which gives me "innit?"

I think that good speech is important. I wouldn't give a job to anyone at my company who said at the job interview, "innit?". If they speak to me like that, are they going to speak like that to my customers? On the phone?

However, I do accept that that language is an organic vessel of communication. It will grow and change, and we just have to go with the flow.
