Saddened, bored or just annoyed by regular news containing crime, war and Paris Hilton?

Then take a look at News of the Weird's stories of silly, funny or just plain strange events around the world.

In the northern Albanian countryside, about 40 women still practice an ancient tradition as "sworn virgins," who are young females who renounce sex forever in exchange for being treated as men, according to an August Washington Post interview of Elvira Dones, an Albanian native who recently completed a documentary on the subject. The oath is usually taken in front of a town's elders, and the likeliest candidates come from homes in need of a male head of household (because of death or abandonment). Even in such a male-dominated society, according to Dones, men seem to accept the "sworn virgins" as equals. [Washington Post, 8-11-07] (www.newsoftheweird.com)

And this one, for we atkineers:

Puzzlingly, young adults in Japan seem particularly drawn toward mayonnaise, and thus Koji Nakamura might have a shot at success with his Mayonnaise Kitchen restaurant in a Tokyo suburb, according to an August Reuters story. Included in his fare are several mayonnaise-flavored cocktails, including the "Mayogarita." [Reuters, 8-14-07] (www.newsoftheweird.com)

Inexplicable: Annual "crying sumo" events are held in several Japanese cities every year (the most recent in Tokyo in April), featuring sumo wrestlers holding specially dressed toddlers out in front of them and coaxing them to cry, with the first bawler declared the winner. Re: Unusual News

There was one about a woman complaining about the news going over to online instead of paper because she had been in the habit of eating her daily newspaper (every morning). She finally got an esophagael blockage, which the doctor removed, scratched his head and said there was nothing to contraindicate eating newspaper except for the fact that it's not food.

Hmm - fiber? I should post all the weird food ones.

LOL Ok if a lady is eating her news paper she's got much bigger problems than esophagael problems...
I mean - who does that!?! LOL

Maybe we should send all of our old news papers to the starving countries around the world! hehe

I know Julie I couldn't do that one either... well I could but wouldn't want to!! LOL

                  Good ones this week:

In November, Britain's new weather-themed Cool Cash lottery game was canceled after one day because too many players failed to understand the rules. Each card had a visible temperature and a temperature to be scratched off, and the purchaser would win if the scratched-off temperature was "lower" than the visible one. Officials said they had received "dozens" of complaints from players who could not understand why, for example, minus-5 is not a lower temperature than minus-6. In Cary, N.C., a woman gave birth to twins early in the morning of Nov. 4, one at 1:32 a.m. and the other 34 minutes later, at 1:06 a.m. (after Daylight-Saving Time ended). [WRAL-TV (Raleigh), 11-6-07] www.newsoftheweird.com

The twin story is really weird. Imagining trying to explain that story to your children. So which one is the older one?
I'm currently trying a new colon cleanser and I feel great.

I thought that was kind of fun. Like being born on Feb 29th in a leap year and only being 4 birthdays old at the chronological age of 16.
