  • Present Ideas

    Hey everyone,

I thought it would be useful to have a thread where we all share present ideas.

Feel free to give ideas/ask for ideas here

    I'll go first:

    - I have 2 sisters still to get for. I'd like to get something for them AND their husbands - a combined present because of limited funds. They are 35 and 40 both have nice and fairly big new houses - any ideas for inexpensive house type things?

I am getting both sets of my parents Aerogardens this year for Christmas. I think with the weak US dollar, it might be a reasonable price for a UK co-present. Here's the link to Amazon, but you might be able to find it elsewhere: http://www.amazon.com/AeroGarden-Sil...7306838&sr=1-3

Do they like to cook, or drink?

I think platters and serving dishes make nice gifts for people who like to cook. I never have enough platters for having company. For those who like to drink, new beer or martini glasses are nice. Or a bottle of their favorite liquor. I dunno, I'm dumb about giving gifts. lol

Fisher-price makes a toy aquarium that straps to the side of the crib. It has bubbles, and little moving fish, and soft lights and music. It successfully mesmerized both my babies and bought me some needed down time, as they would watch that and fall asleep. I recommend them highly and give them to each new mother I know. It is called the Ocean Wonders Aquarium.

Its kinda cheating to buy the baby something and give it her LOL, i wasnt something for her, i've bought my Niece something and her half-sister, i just wanted something for mommy

I may look at that as an addition to my nieces present though

Ha ha - give mummy a gift certificate for a pedicure, or for some babysitting hours. She'll appreciate those more than you can imagine!

                    Re: Present Ideas

Alexa for house type things, if they've recently just moved into their houses or just got married, Christmas decorations usually come in handy, collectibe type tree decorations? you can make it a tradition and buy them a dated one every year...I do this for a friend of mine who i just exchange a small gift with.

This year i'm buying someone an LCD picture frame, not sure how much they are in the US but you can get them here for around $60/70 on sale. I'm giving my sister in law a regular collage frame and i'm going to put family pictures in there for her.

One year i bought someone a nice coloured enamal colander, gourmet pasta sauce, pasta, 2 pasta plates, olive oil, jar of garlic etc. basically the ingredients for a nice dinner (obviously that doesn't need refrigeration). and put it in a basket, wrap with cellophane. You can do this with baking stuff as well if they like to bake: a pan, icing decorating kit, the ingrients for bread, cake etc. Or.... you can do the mason jar cookies: you put the exact amounts of the dry ingrients for your favourite cookie recipe layered in a nice mason jar decorated, nice ribbon etc, then put the handritten recipe on the jar, all they need to do is add the wet ingredients. you can include the pan etc in this gift as well.

Family circle did an article on homemade food gifts this month, the cookies are in there: http://www.parents.com/parents/slide...965.xml&page=2

I've always found on a budget homemade gifts are the most cost effective.

Emma how bout a gift cert at her favourite hair salon etc? and why can't you get pedicures in britain? is there an actual reason or is it just not popular there?

I wish I could offer some stellar advise for gifts...I'm kind of stuck myself.

All I can think of is gift certificates....so practical, yet not personal either.

Emma--I'd get the "mommy" something really nice for herself...lotions, bath bubbles, that kind of thing (I love the Body Shop, a great place to get that kind of thing!)

For sort of "generic" gifts, I find that alcohol is always a welcome gift, especially with the holidays. A couple nice bottles of wine, some good liqour, a sampler pack of microbrewed beer, etc. I also like to bake for friends and family--cut out cookies, chocolate covered cherries, french bread, molasses cookies, etc.

If a person has a specific interest or hobby, you could do a gift basket kind of thing. If they like golf, why not find some cool tees, golf balls, groovy socks, etc. If they like to cook, how about silicone oven mitts, fancy spice blends, cute kitchen towels, etc.

No pedicures, curious. I wonder if you would make a mint, opening up a proper manicure/pedicure salon, or if there's just no market for it.
